Bad chip or average? (960T)

The below post was using the original AM3 motherboard I had, ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3:

I have reached pretty much the limit for my computer, nothing in any combination allows me to push further :) Currently at about 2 hours into a Prime95 Blend test with no issues, had IBT verify stable, and had BOINC going with MooWraper for about 8 hours with no issues.

Now I would like opinions on if this is a decent chip or a dud (due to voltage requirements) if you gentlemen could please give your experience with similar chips.

CPU: Zosma 960T, Unlocked to 5 cores @ 1.572 - 1.584 volts (floats a bit with load)
Core0: 4375
Core1: 4250
Core2: 4250
Core3: 4375
Core4: 4125 (the unlocked core)
Core5: DEAD
CPU/NB: 2750 1.3125 volts
HTT: 250 / 2500
VDDA: 2.5
CPU LLC = Off (on causes VRM overheating)
NB LLC = Off (on causes VRM overheating)
Motherboard: Asus M4A88T-V EVO/USB3, Water Cooled VRM/NB, EK Blocks (All MB voltages have been bumped up by .1volts)
RAM: 16GB (4x4) @ 1333, 9-9-9-27 1.6volts

At 4410 (252 HTT) core 0 gets flakey. Temps never pass 52c, under any load (CPU Temp not useless CORE temps lol). Anyway, just wanted to share what my 960T got to at it's Watercooled limit and see how it compares to others.

Its a shame it doesn't unlock, but your chip is actually quite good.

If my chip was any indication, those are some pretty good results. (Minus the one failed core.)

I couldn't get mine to stabilize at 4GHz with 1.5V, and this was with just four cores. I could get mine to unlock to all six cores, though. Did 3.8GHz at 1.42v, not sure what it took for yours to get there.

Mine wasn't watercooled, although I never got anywhere near 65C+ even at 1.5V...

Thanks, guess ill hold onto it instead of scrounging for an 1100tbe that might be sitting on a shelf somewhere lol.

5 cores will work.

Ever since AMD EOL'd the 45nm chips (so all PhIIs) I've seen the prices of them rise on ebay. I bought my 1055t for $130, and I've seen recent auctions ending at $140+. I wouldn't "waste" any more money on a PhII chip, unless having all six cores is important and/or you just want to be xtreme like that. lol

I got that feeling, that's why I bought my 960t on an impulse buy. Gonna have to sell both chips soon to recoup the costs of my SB build.

Honestly at the moment, I am totally satisfied with the 960t, it does what i need it to do just fine, so for 125 bucks, it was a great deal!

Next upgrade wont be till late ivy bridge or later, and if piledriver isnt amazing, ill be jumping ship for the first time in 12 years :(

I held out for BD... we all know what a mistake that was :D I wasn't going to hold out for PD after BD, so I jumped ship to Intel. Have been using AMD since the K6 days, but it makes no sense to buy a new board/chip/memory for the same cost that I could build a SB rig for with IB support.

You have a nice chip (compared to mine). Get that sucker to 4.5GHz! Lol.

Well since I am a tweaker at heart, no real reason, just like to tweak stuff constantly :)

I ordered a Crosshair 5 Formula today from Newegg for a lolable $165 woohoo! Waterblock for the board is in the mail from EK.

Finally we can see apples to apples comparison of what swapping from a mid level ASUS board to a ROG board will net you for increased overclocking and if a ROG is really necessary for WC/Air overclocking or if you can get by with a quality mid level board from ASUS.


I really hope that ROG is not just hype when compared to another ASUS board as far as overclocking headroom. If there is even a small difference in its ability I should be able to hit 4.5 on at least 2 of my cores I think! Worst case if it is just hype, ill toss the older ASUS in the wifes computer with the 960t and grab an 8170 and see how high I can push it.

Just need my Peltier setup from Mindchill to get here so I can see what near 0c does for this chip lol.

I think you mean about 4.4...
As far as overclocking headroom, the board is built for LN2 :)

Though you might see some gains over that board with a Crosshair V Formula.

I just don't get it though, why a 960T and highest end board + water cool the board?

If only I had disposable income to throw away on new toys to play with... SSDs are expensive too... damn this hobby lol.
