DC12V power Supply

Hey guys i just got a new temp display for my single stage and it requires a 12vdc power supply (it has the terminal/leads you screw the wire into).

I have a couple of ideas let me know which would actually work.


I have a 12V Power cord from some electronic device here is the specs:
model: kss24-120-2000
input: 100-240V
Output: 12V - 20000mA



Another one:
model: AU123112030
Input: 100-240V
Output: 12V - 2A


The other option:
I know i could take a 4 pin power supply cable (same used with harddrives) chop it and use it with my internal power supply and it will work, the only down side is i will have to power the computer at the same time of the single stage to see the temps drop to the safe zone. This is only as a last resort, im hoping one of these power supplies will work.

Keep in mind, that display takes next to nothing to power. So any psu at all really will work.

While a 2 amp or 2000mA are the same, they are also fine to use. The display will only draw the power it needs.

Only thing that can get in the way is if the psu needs a significant draw to come on. If your psu's are like that, the display may not have enough power draw to tell it to turn on.

Doubt it though, if they're like old laptop 'bricks' or whatever they generally just come on and are able to supply UP TO that 2 amp limit. So they should work fine, just make sure you get the polarity correct.

Wrong polarity won't 'usually' damage the display. Most times it just doesn't work if you get it backwards, but it's nice to know for sure.

thanks for the quick reply gray, glad your back around these woods. The adapters are from some sort of electronic device, one is for some insignia radio player and the other i just found. I will try them and see how they work, thanks again!

Worst case the display won't power on :D

First one says, 20,000mah, thats 20 amps. So use the 2amp one.
Or just splice it onto 12v line from computer.

The 20000 is likely a typo. A 20 amp psu is huge, and the part no. says 120-2000 so it's 2000mA.

And I think it's for a phase unit, so being able to read the temp before the PC startup is the idea. Would be nice to have a 12v and 5v standby power for this kind of thing though. Considering a display takes next to no power, it wouldn't strain anything. The 5vsb would work on a 5v display, though you'd have to have one more plug to deal with so I guess just getting a cheap/free psu is good too.

But yeah, mostly a display just doesn't work if the polarity is wrong, haven't heard of any blowing smoke when you reverse it, but never know I guess.

I buy up lots of 12v, 5v, and any other handy psu sizing I can find when they're cheap. Starting to run out though, sucks. I think I had 25 at one point just in 12v as well as others. Guess you never figure you'll run out :p:

Oh yeah, hey Circaflex, got any pics of the display? Always curious about which ones ppl use and how they do. I've had loads of 5v/PC ones and they're really accurate but can blank out when the compressor switches sometimes. I just ordered some 12v ones that look the same, hoping the power circuit is a bit more resistant to EM.
