one of these days ill buy a mount for my telescope and ill get back into shooting.

another forum told me its not horsehead, its M42 :<

what kind of lens will yield the best pictures for this type of photo?

Depends how much you are willing to spend.

And depends if you want "whole sky" or just smaller bit of it (means wide-angle or telephoto).

Plus its not just lens in this case, but you need some body with really low noise (D3s would be best choice, D700 after that).

For lens its quite simple, it must be fast and sharp at wide-open. Which not many lens are. I think that for Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 might be actually good idea. Similar goes for Canon as both lens are pretty much best that both companies do.

Ofc it can be done with much cheaper lens and body, current Sony 16 mpix APS-C are pretty good regarding low noise (means Nikon D5100, D7000, Sony NEX-5N, Sony A55, A580, A35). Cheapest would be probably A35. For astro, well there would be one great thing if you want just bits of skye, that would be Sony ZA 135mm f1.8 .. just its kinda crazy expensive. Ofc there is cheaper way, which would be probably ZA 24mm f2 (35mm equiv. fast enough), tho I think it has lots of coma, which should be kinda "ok-ish" on APS-C, but still coma is thing you want to avoid, or your stars turns to wierd blobs at corners of frame.

Hm yea and as you dont need AF, 35mm f1.4 Samyang might be good for pretty much every system. Hard infinity stop is actually useful for astrophoto. And from F2, it should be quite sharp.

Best thing would be to find some astrophoto site and learn there. :D

I have a used D90,
18-70 used Nikon lens
28-200 used Tamron lens
70-300 used Tamron lens

dont think i paid more then 150 for any of those lenses.

For close up pictures you want larger focal length lenses. The next step would be to get a Telescope with camera attachments. can do like 1200mm+ focal lengths

The larger the aperture the larger the price. the largest lense i have uses f3.5 and with the right settings still makes great photos. some of my photos are not even using large apertures, I have some with f8+ and the time lapse was f20

I have right now in my hand a 50mm 1.8 from canon a 100mm macro usm and waiting to get here a L series 70-200 2.8

which one is the best to get a nice picture of the sky with my T1i
