Intel Core i7-3960X Reviews
-
-
Quote:
We were recently able to benchmark Intel's upcoming Core i7-3960X CPU, comparing it to Core i7-990X, Core i7-2600K, and AMD's Phenom II X6.
Has Bulldozer become the Ron Paul in tech media?
-
good idea to start this thread now!
-
WTF? So little improvement (~26%) in 3DMark11 Physics score over the i7 990X? I was expecting 50% a while ago...
-
this is a repost article with new bits added to it.....
the end comment just proves it.
-
Im honestly surprised there is very little to no improvement over 1155 sockets CPU's.

It's the same architecture, you can't expect huge improvements.

True.
But, there are two extra cores, plus the Quad Channel Memory.
-
The thing to note about the link in the OP is that its 2 months old. Plenty of time for BIOS improvements.
Roll on NDA-lift and a full set of reviews :D I kinda hope it's a total fail :p:
-
Please everyone remember the date of the Tom's article. This was before multiple BIOS updates to the platform; some of which ushered in some significant changes.

We already have more memory bandwidth than most real world applications than use. The benefit of quad channel may only be seen in synthetics.
An extra 2 cores will only benefit properly coded multi threaded real world apps, otherwise only synthetic benchmarks.
The results aren't really surprising at all.

The article is from September 12, 2011...................... so why posting this now?

My bad, it was late at night I googled found the review and thought it was dated November 12, 2011 hahaha

looks like a great deal for 1366 owners looking for an upgrade if they have the money.
-
wait for more review of another 2 models

You mean one other model? AFAIK the 4C/8T one is going te be released later.

Not liking those power consumption figures much. With any luck the new silicon revision will pull that in a bit :)
-
So there's pretty much no reason to buy the 3960X over the 3930K (based off these reviews).

The i7 3930K is mine, looks pretty good from that Chinese review, performs quite close to the i7 3960X at a much cheaper price.

Indeed, right now the extra cache seems to do nothing or very little. X should really have had the extra 2 cores enabled, screw power consumption. So I guess the only real use is e-peen or benching? Base quad is completely pointless unless you put those extra pci-e lanes to very good use.
Either way, looks like my setup and many others here will last some time to come, till haswell?
-
The load power consumption is expected but ok for the performance.
And its still funny people moan about it... its a CPU for MT workload and there it stomps everything available. Can't wait to test it with fluent. :D

Anyone know what time the NDA expires?
