Motherboard Tray - searching for dimensions, please help!

Hi ppl! :)

As the title implies, I'm currently preparing for making my own case, scratch build, and need a hand with MB tray. Want to make a MB tray that is compatible with HPTX/XL-ATX/E-ATX/ATX (mATX - as they use same holes). If possible with PCI slot's back panel too, if not I will buy some (PPCS sells DD ones e.g.) or use one from other case. So, my main trouble is hole spacing on MB tray for these standards, to check do they share some of them? Any chance to get some diagram for this with dimensions of hole spacing?

I've searched the net, but no luck. Also would be very expensive for me to buy one from MM or any other vendor (even PPCS from where the group of us makes group order from time to time so we save on shipping) cause of shipping and the overall price. For that amount I can get all the mats ( alu sheets, rails, plexiglass etc.) I will be needing for my future project.

There has to be some data on this, someone was in my situation for sure. Please help, any info is appreciated. Thank you all. :)

Sorry, for posting this here, was a dilemma where to post it. Here or in the mods section, but think it will be well here as most of scratch builds and case mods are done for WC purposes.

Why not make your own motherboard tray? I have done it a few times and it is not very difficult. You can use a motherboard as a templete for the spacing of the holes.

I have a couple of the MM trays, but I am not sure I can get the measurements from them right now as they are installed. I will be pulling it apart in the next couple weeks to start my H20 and will be able to get them then. \
How much of a rush are you in? If I can get them sooner; I will.

Yeah, I wanna make one. The ATX is not a problem, I figured that at the worst case scenario I will use the MB as a template for the spacing of holes. As you suggested. But I wanna make it compatible with E-ATX, XL-ATX and preferably HPTX (SR2 is in that form factor e.g.).
So I need to know how big overall MB tray should be, that is changeable regarding what I want besides MB to be placed on it (e.g cable routing holes, place for reservoir...) and most importantly I need spacing for the holes and which holes are shared if any between these form factors. If nothing else, I need some diagram with dimensions of mobos and their holes placing in these form factors and then I will figure out the rest...

That would be awesome, especially if those MM trays support all of these form factors. I could copy then the most universal MB tray from your collection, looks like the simplest way so far. I'm not in a hurry, prolly won't start making it for another 3-5 weeks. If you start your work eariler just give me a call please and you will have my eternal gratitude. :yepp:

Just checked the MM again, looks like the most universal one is this one http://www.mountainmods.com/mountain...tray-p-56.html. The XL-ATX one and HPTX one are made only for those two standards, not supporting smaller ones - E-ATX and ATX, so would be great if you could measure the one from the link, that is hope you have that one. Then I could partially solve the problem. If you have two different mobo trays we could finally make some sort of a drawing combining them. Saw a lot of ppl staying without the solution on this subject. :)

Thanks mate. Yeah, already checked it. Saved the document on ATX 2.2 revision, current one is 2.3 but don't think it's important regarding the dimensions of holes. Anyway the doc is useful for ATX but there are no data regarding the other factors I need. Anyway, appreciate it. :up:

Well I don't really understand why lots of people DO have these sizes and built cases and still there are no drawings :< Here is my sample for HPTX tray (please note that dimensions of cutouts for PCI cards in tray are not precise :))

I can confirm that the http://scc.jezmckean.com/item/509 is good. I have dubble checked measurements i made myself and on ATX specifications etc. And it looks like they are correct. Im about to go ahead and send my stuff to the water jet soon.

Ok, so far I have 3 or more schematics in form of .skp, .pdf or .jpeg for ATX f.f. Will check them all for measures to be sure. HPTX data seems to be fine too and Brodholm also confirmed on this, so prolly won't check drawings for this.

Yet, critical data we have here is concerning the E-ATX and XL-ATX.

What worries me is that Intel's mobo has measures of 13x12" while I see that eVGA's have 12x10,375"... Don't like that? Also, there is EVGA Tri-SLI Classified sketch here http://scc.jezmckean.com/cat/19, for which I dunno should I rely on... So, either Intel or eVGA isn't following the standard? Dunno... But looking on some simple diagram, http://www.evga.com/articles/00501/, I get the feeling E-ATX is using only 2 additional holes on far right? And the rest are remnants from ATX, it's just a bit wider? Can anyone confirm this please?

Regarding XL-ATX, thanks to Wolf132 we got one schematic, though I have nothing to compare it except this sketchup http://www.evga.com/articles/00501/ of eVGA's X58 Classified 4-Way SLI Edition. Also dunno can I rely on it.

If there's more data on XL-ATX and E-ATX please post it. Once I get enough for comparing I will try to draw a universal MB tray, never used Sketchup or any tool of similar kind (student of medicine, nothing here but enthusiasm :D) so prolly will do it by hand and leave it for future builders ...

EATX is 305x330mm (or 12.99"x12.01" if you prefer) to my knowledge (feel free to correct me here) EVGA have never made an EATX board, they make boards that they call EATX such as the 141-GT-E770-A1 but when you check the measurements it's 304.5x263.5mm which lies somewhere between ATX and EATX.

EVGA boards are all either ATX or proprietary.

Three additional holes, here's a nice large picture of an EATX board in which you can clearly see the mounting holes. The top and centre holes line up with pre-existing holes on the horizontal, the bottom hole only lines up with the two new holes vertically.

This is what I found out today digging through Asus, Gigabyte and previously through eVGA websites.

Looks like XL-ATX is format supported only by Gigabyte and eVGA so far. And guess what, dimensions are the same... So looks like that one is fine.

But then, I jumped on E-ATX bandwagon and a bit different numbers started to show. There are two groups in this soup. The first group is consisted of Asus, eVGA, Gigabyte and one Intel board and it includes several models, not many E-ATX mobos indeed and dimensions of these are 12 x 10,375 = 304.8mm x 263.5mm for eVGA and 12 x 10.5 (10.6) = 30.5cm x 26.7cm(26.9cm) for some of the Gigabyte and Asus boards - these measures show up in lineups of both manufacturers on different models. And only on one model of Intel's server board. Also among the specifications of Asus and Gigabyte these measures are named as CEB standard at one product page for each of them. The rest of the Intel lineup is based on something called SSI EEB: 12x13 = 305mm x 330mm which I consider a second group and those are true server boards; the same form factor is used in Gigabyte's and Asus' lineups for erver boards... Anyway, asura you were right. Boards we use are somewhere in between of ATX and E-ATX. :)

Now, I'll have to see what to do... Will do some research on CEB and SSI EEB and maybe I can find a precise schematic. Good thing I found out along the way, and didn't know it, is that HAF-X support's E-ATX and XL-ATX models from all mentioned MB manufacturers. So maybe will try to find someone around here to get the measures...

I don't think size 40.53mm is correct @ this XL-ATX drawing, because 40.53mm= 1.595669" (and 1.6" = 40.64mm).
Concerning E-ATX - yes, everyone calls their boards EATX if they are a bit wider than standard ATX. IMHO you need correct standoff placement and basic mainboard sizes + some non-standard boards sizes - like monster mainboards from EVGA or Gigabyte :) Can't check if HPTX drawing is correct because I don't have HPTX board...

You might want to use google sketchup and layout the holes and print a template to use if you are going to drill your own holes. Make sure you are printing at 100% and are in the proper view straight on the piece.

I contacted the person who made the drawing, and he sent me the .dwg file of his work (My appreciation for that gesture! Many thanks!) along with the printable version of it. Well, think I'll ask around and find someone to print it for me and then try to add the holes for other form factors around his design. I have trust in his design, looks precise.

Yep, as I said it up here, I plan something like that. But after it gonna do some serious checkup on holes spacing especially for E-ATX.

For E-ATX I came up with the idea to visit my friend and take some measures from 800D which supports that f.f. Maybe I could find dead E-ATX server board and compare it with the layout of 800D and use it as a template... We'll see how lucky I am in that search. Got flu since yesterday so a bit slowed down atm on my quest... :D
