New SB build: How's my build?

Greetings!

I think the time has come for me to pull the trigger on a new machine. I was waiting for SBE to release, but i think that, given the pre production numbers and leaks, SBE isnt worth it for me to wait for anymore. Primarily, i will be using this machine for 3D rendering in Blender or Rhino, with the occasional game (swtor anyone?). Now thst you are familiar with what im going to use this for, here is the hardware list i was thinking of:

2600K with a mild overclock ( thinking around 4.5 for 24/7)
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
EVGA 580GTX 3GB
Corsair 850TX PSU
Corsair H80 CPU Cooler
Corsair vengence 2x4 kit CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9
Corsair Special Edition White Graphite Series 600T

So, anyone have any thoughts/ipnput? Im pretty sure most of the list is fine, but im unsure about the mobo and the ram. Also, im unsure of how well these new all-in-one liquid cooling solutions wrok and how reliable they are, though i hear pretty good things. Any input would be great, especially if some one has any direct experience with any potential problems / incompatabilities.

Should be fine - just built something similar and with auto-overclocking it runs at 4.4. I'm guessing 4.8 will be my daily overclock once I get it dialed in. I have the same MB, processor, and psu. 16 GB G Skill & a 6950 2 GB to round out my build. Oh, and a 128GB M4 - hehe!

Hmm, 16GB of ram might not be a bad idea. Otherwise, everything looks good? Was wondering about the ram, since so many people seem to be going with gskill or whatever this time around.

Go straight with H100, slightly better temps then the H80 but with less noise (balanced setting selected). Or you can replace the fans on the H80...

Ram wise the Corsairs are good bang for the buck, but some users have noticed zero to almost no OCability on them... if you intend to stick with 1600mhz speeds, no worries... it's just on SB, more ram speed means better performance... timings don't matter that much...

Really? I thought that the performance gains from OCing your ram in this generation were very marginal? I mean, i really could have sworn thats what everyones finding were :O

Ouch! When did Corsair decide to not make products for enthusiasts? The 4Gb of dominator i have in my old box are awsome in every sense of the word. Hmm, looking at g skill now...any suggestions for a good 2x4 kit of 1600?

Depends on what you are doing ofc... ram timings are more for benchers and co, but the gain from 1333 to eg 2133 is nice. (Intel-Sandy-Bridge-CPU-In-Depth-Look-at-Overclocking-Memory-Timings-and-More For gamers 1600C8 is a nice mix of speed and timings... Though if you can get more speed from a decent kit, why not do it :)

been that way for a long time with corsair lol
so many damn revisions

i saw patriot 1866 2x4 on sale for 50$ after mir last week

i have a few sets of dominators but i got the rev i wanted lol

i stick with gskills or higher bins

ram is cheap these days
grab a 1600 cas8 or 2133 stuff
wait for a sale:D

u could do a better case like a fractal design for the same price range if not less.

on the ram, it dose not matter, just get something 1600 with good timings or 1866, it all ends up making little to no diffrence and most of it will clock to 1866 cas8 anyways so there is no point in dropping a bunch of money unless u are zsamz or the like with plays with ram.

Fractal designs huh? Any specific model suggestions? Ive never looked at their stuff before.

You are the second person to tell me that! Will the H100 fit in the 600T case? I mean it does have a 2 core rad, so i just want to make sure its gonna fit before i order one.

from the FAQ :

What size radiator will fit in the top of the 600T?

I figured thats where it would go. So, pardon me for being dense this morning, but removing the top fan would kill the thermal efficiency of that case, wouldnt it? I mean assuming you didnt put in the optional side mesh and some extra fans. Amrite?

no why ? you still got fresh air coming in via the front ( and/or optional side fans), hot air goes trough the top and the H100 and via the rear fan... no issues with airflow...

I like that one too but I wasn't sure about your budget. That kit will most likely overclock higher with looser timings

Mushkin might be worth considering as well...

So you would use the H100 as exhaust? I would think it would be better suited to pulling IN fresh air....

As for the ram, im still leaning toward that last Gskill kit i linked. Still not convinced an H100 is needed though, considering im looking to do only a mild OC for 24/7 use. But i do live in a very hot state....

That's the cool part about an H100, you can use it as an exhaust, run it in balanced mode and still it cools better than an H80 ( setup to suck in air)... 1) the H100 will not disturb your airflow in the case , 2) nor will it dump the heat into the case alike the other Hydros (when being installed in the normal way)... and you got the space, so use it well...

Ok, you convinced me. I think the H100 might be the way to go then. Thanks for the input!

H100 isn't needed for 4.6Ghz+ with a 2600K. Also let me just say that case airflow will play the biggest part.

I jusut had a thought. Lets say i end up getting a second 580gtx... Will an 850W PSU handle two 580s and a mild.cpu overclock?

you don't even need a Hydro to do so, it can be done on a boxed cooler if you have a cool CPU. But the point is with the Hydro 100 ( as the thread starter wanted to buy a H80 ) you get sligthly better cooling performance and this at less noise for a meazle 10 bucks extra.... Plus the airflow isn't disturbed as the H100 sucks out hot air (way Corsair advises you to install it) Versus the H80, which for maximum performance needs to suck in ambient air ( otherwise you have a 2-3 °C performance loss ) and dumps the heat into the case...

So IF the OP wants to go for a Hydro, it's best to go straight for the high end model iso a slightly cheaper and lower performing / specced model...


For the PSU Skrips, I'm running an 850TX with a 990X at 4.3Ghz ( to remain at sub 1.3Vcore ) and 2 x 580s with no worries...

But was gaming your main priority ? or do your programs also render on the GPU ?
