Quick question for you guys - does Monowall support the Realtek 8111E network adapter? I haven't found anything conclusive yes or no. Looking to load monowall onto an AMD Zacate mini-itx box and the Asus board has that NIC chip on it. The board has only one PCIe slot so that's going to be needed for the second NIC (which if you have any particular recommendations for that, that would be great).
I can't verify this, but I would expect it to. The 8111e is part of a series that has been around for a long while with strong support, so I would say that it should be covered.
I always recommend Intel NICs. Something like an Intel PRO/1000 CT would work nicely and is supported. The key to finding compatibility on projects like this is to find what OS and revision they're based on. Monowall 1.3 is based on FreeBSD 4.11. Here is BSD's HCL for the i386 version which Monowall uses:

I don't see the Realtek IC listed. It's an extremely common controller at the moment, but it may be that the version of FreeBSD Monowall 1.3 is based on is too old. FreeBSD is on release 8.2 now after all. I'd really suggest ditching Monowall and going with pfSense instead.
Hard when there is only one expansion slot because it is a mini-ITX box otherwise I would put two intel NICs in. That's the issue.Quote:

I thought you meant to add two and just not use the onboard Realtek. My bad.
I was hoping to use this Asus zacate board as the intel atom boards are similar cost, but zacate smacks atom as far as performance goes. But if I have to get an atom to get the hardware needed, then I guess I will.
Note this isn't for me. This is work related, and my boss wants to use monowall.

Pfsense is based on free bsd and they recommend intel cards I only found 1 reference to realtek and that was an 80XX driver
The Intel 82572 controller isn't listed on the HCL. I don't think you'll find a *lot* of PCIe cards that are supported on a build of FreeBSD that old.

Edit: But you know, I'm positive I've seen a number of monowall installations in the last few years that were on current hardware. And I know that at least some of them used whatever NICs were on-board and not Intel ones. Might actually work anyway. I say buy the motherboard and give it a go. If it doesn't work, just install linux and a firewall program.
the RL driver in bsd (in most open source os) is bad.
Grab an intel card the FXP driver is far far better.
