CeBIT 2011: ASRock 890FX Deluxe5 - Get your AM3+ CPUs ready

ASRock showed one of its first high end AM3+ motherboards at Cebit, named 890FX Deluxe5. Apart from supporting AMD AM3/AM3+ CPUs, it features Advanced V8+2 Power Phase design, Turbo UCC technology, four DDR3 1866MHz slots, 3 x PCI-Express x16 (AMD CrossFireX), four USB 3.0 and six SATA 6.0 Gbps ports.

They are not different, AM3+ is backwards compatible with AM3. However, while AM3 CPUs work perfectly in both AM3 and AM3+ sockets, Bulldozer CPUs (AM3+) will exclusively work on AM3+ socket :) The demo system had the AM3+ 890FX Deluxe5 along with a 1100T.

AM3+ socket supports both AM3+ CPUs (bulldozer) and AM3 CPUs ( thuban,regor,propus,deneb ),Am3 socket only supports Am3 CPUs.

That first PCIe x1 slot is useless. NICs nor Sound cards will fit thereas the NB heatsink is too tall. What gives?? (Same issue on my 890GX)

It's a budget Asus what do you expect? And to all the it's not a part of Asus people come on.. "deluxe" they even take Asus naming scheme.

Well I guess AM3+ is really just AM3 v1.5 Seems the same just what one more pin hole, and faster memory support? I'm sure I'm missing something else?

I agree. I don't get why they do that, especially when the heatsinks probably don't need to be so big. Maybe they've found it only matters to a few people, so they disregard it not making sense.

I'm still leaning toward MSI's BBC, but It's nice to see some new gear showing up at CeBit. :yepp:

The x90FX design has 36 PCIe Gen2 lanes off the NB, HT3 and a dedicated 'full' lane to the USB3 controller ... the SB850 has 6 SATA 6GB/s

All bloviating aside, that pretty much tops the industry in it's segment. Not sure why that gives you reservations about BD performance.

I think I'm seeing a trend -- AM3+ (or AM3b / AM3rc2) sockets seem to be that dingy black/grey color. Isn't that different than all other 890FX AM3 conventional sockets?

I'm not seeing an issue with NICs -- can't help you with sound cards. I suspect there is a general specification and that AsRock complies with it.

edit: I fergit ... this seems to confirm that 1866MHz has native support!

I like Gigabyte's NB heatsink design better. They actually cut away the part where the add-in card would go (on my 790GX, I'm using my sound card in the top slot). A lot of people think that it hurts the chipset cooling, but it's quite the opposite. It means that the air from my CPU cooler, which is pointing upwards, is actually funneling air around the NB heatsink creating a wind tunnel.

Besides, NB heatsinks have a huge thermal threshold. Really, there's no reason for Asus to cut that slot off.

I suppose the question you really have to ask yourself is if you really want to use this for a future Bulldozer build not based on a 900-series chipset.
