I'm a lil confused about its purpose.. is it to simply attach 16 HDDs, no RAID?
or MUST you have a LSI RAID controller, & this acts as a way of attaching more HDDs to the RAID controller? (so that the 2 cards work together).
I'm actually hoping that I can simply use it by itself, to attach 16 HDDs, no RAID :yepp:

All LSISAS2108-based RAID HBA's firmware mode are iMR mode..
Supports up to 16x 6gb ports, i dont see why it would be a addon for a LSI card just to add more slots, if it is then its one of a kind but i highly doubt it mate..

^ the HCL list already includes couple LSI 92XX cards.. the thing is, ir u read the op it says to connect RAID card to HP via port 8 or something - not the external, which is what I want to do :)
cause if I can, the gives me 32 SAS/SATA (both work the same /whatever) - not that I need that many.. at most I need 28 :D

I recommend populating drives beginning with internal Port #2. To uplink the expander to your RAID/HBA, connect to Port #8 on the expander with an SFF-8087 cable from your RAID/HBA. If your RAID/HBA has an external SFF-8088 connector, connect to Port #1 on the expander with an external SFF-8088 cable.
