Corsair Hx1000 to power 3-way SLI GTX 580's?

I'm currently running my system with a HX1000; powering quad-SLI GTX 295's.

I'll be selling the 295's, and upgrading to three GTX 580's. I need to know whether or not the HX1000 will be able to drive this system. It does have the correct plugs etc, but will I be stressing the PSU too much?

I haven't had a hiccup yet, with the 295's, and they have been highly overclocked.

I see that most people running a 3-way SLI 480 or 580 system are opting for very high wattage PSU's - between 1200 and 1500. While I can see the logic in this, I suspect that the HX1000 is a good performer, and might be able to run a similar configuration - which would save me more $$$ since the 580's are expensive enough.

According to THIS LIST, 580s are rated at a TDP of 244w which x3 is 732w. If you are able to fully load the CPU and the GPUs, you would really be pushing 90% or more capacity on the PSU. It will do it but, it's not what I would recommend.

I will be testing the system in a day or two when I receive the cards - if I run into stability problems etc - I may have to replace the PSU.

What's the worst that can happen? The PSU cuts out?

yep it will just power off...try two cards first....

Well ... I got the 3 GTX580's yesterday, and I did the build today.

The corsair is running them now, and they seem stable. I had to fiddle around with the various modular plugs, to find a kind of load balance that worked.

I'm pretty sure I'm close to max capacity of the PSU, but I've been playing some BFBC2 at full settings, working the cards pretty hard on a surround resolution of 8100x1440 (bezel corrected) and the PSU seems to handle it.

Fingers crossed things stay fine, it will save me the cost of a new PSU.

It's been a few months since you posted anything about this setup. I'm ordering two GTX580's tomorrow for my 2D Surround setup. I've got the HX1000 with 3x GTX260's currently. Has the HX1000 held up with the 580's?? I'm very interested in hearing about it because I'd like to pick up a third 580 in a few weeks.

That's what I'm thinking too, I'll just leave them at stock until I really want to jump up in psu wattage. I'm sure the GTX580's will be a nice step up from the GTX260's until I decide to make the psu switch.

for normal PC setup it shouldnt be an issue but benching you;d be better of with AX1200, it's a killer PSU

The AX1200 looks great. Don't see Oklahoma Wolf this impressed with a PSU that often.

Personally I wouldn't run a PSU to 90%+ capacity, but it's your setup, you have to make the decision.

I have a Corsair HX1000 psu for a long time now . I've run 5970 qf @ heavy clocks , GTX 580 X2 SLI . I've ran Furmark for 1 hour straight testing these kinds of graphic set ups . This psu is actually 1210 watts . Its a very good psu . The Corsair AX1200 is my next psu , this one has just over 1400 watts . Enjoy those GTX 580 X3 SLI set up , very nice indeed !
