MSI Big Bang XPower vmods

So, I saw that the mods still don't seem to be out in the open, so I thought I'd share (just like I said I would ages ago).

First up is the input power from the 8-pin connectors, which is capped at about 30A by one single choke. Just solder another one in parallel to increase this limit.

Then there's of course OCP, which is at 200A from factory, with a 82.5k resistor. Just change to a resistor with lower resistance, 40k is 400A, which should be enough. Or just short the damn thing to get rid of it altogether. :)

Another useful thing to mod might be the PWM switching frequency, which is set to 250kHz, although you may benefit from a bit higher frequency under LN2 runs. MSI itself recommends about 600kHz, which is achieved by changing the resistor shown to a 12k one. Just don't use 600kHz for 24/7 use on air, since the VRMs tend to produce quite a lot more heat than at 250kHz. :)

So yeah, there you have it. I'd be dishonest if I took any credit for it, but at least you've got the mods right there for any future use. :)

Some of these mods are not needed on retail boards (OCP is set to 360 amps by default and the input inductors for the EPS 12V line have been uprated). I had to urge MSI heavily during development to make these changes otherwise all retail boards would have been 1.0 and capped to around 180 amps VCC. The switching frequency is the only mod benchers may want to try.

Bear in mind though that MSI are holding back one "modification" at present relating to the high VTT requirement of this board and its apparent issues clocking memory as well as other boards when used with the same CPU and memory modules.

Heh, maybe that's why nobody has shared the mods before. I just assumed we all had retail boards for the EU MOA finals, as they had serial numbers and came in retail boxes. Did all these mods on them.

But hey, thanks for the input and clarification, even though I'm just sharing whatever I get my hands on. :)

msi can't made a board with all of that limits....

lol no one shaired them cause they dont do naff all :)
tryed all mods on a rev 1.0 it made it worse

this weekend we took a stock rev 1.0 and got 6.1ghz on a 980x

but as said all xpowers now should be rev 1.1 and have the mods alrady on

Just place a 100K resistor in parallel, that should do just fine :)

It will work, but that's just an easy fix. The best thing to do is of course just raise the OCP limit instead of bricking the board/CPU if any 700A load would come along. :)

Besides, all the MOA contestants should have the new mod guide by now, I suppose. Funny thing is, they still included the QPI mod, who needs 2.0VQPI? :D

They've included a QPI droop mod as well, but I won't be sharing that till after the competition, as I'm not quite sure if that'd be appreciated by MSI if I did it right away.

Worked out ok for us and Team Anti-Denmark in MOA EU :D

Hi end boards that still require mods...... hmmm....

Well it was already mentioned the newer revision bord doesn't need these mods. Personally I very much like MSI for publishing these mod guides, they are there so overclockers can unleash ever bit of performance possible out of their setups. You don't see that kinda support from other manufacturers, at least not in a comprehensive manner like MSI has done.
