QX9770 vs QX9650
Hey all,
I'm considering doing a small upgrade to my current rig and give it some more lifespan.
I'm considering passing from my Q9450 that tops at 3.44ghz to an extreme edition and try t push for 4ghz air (i have decent air cooling, thermalright ultra 120 with 2 scythe 120 fans pushing/sucking).
You'll tell me "we are playing with i7 and you are still there? Well my budget doesn't allow me to move to a higher platform. Currently I can find a Qx9650 at a fairly good price. Do you think it's worth looking for a QX9770 instead? Will the QX9650 give me the same results? (I understand I should aim for a SLAWN C1 stepping).

Hey Emertx, thanks for answering! Well i'm not planning to buy a new comp for at least 3 years from now, so I want to do that upgrade since I will be taking my comp apart to clean up the dust etc. So I will change the processor. Thanks anyway for your input.

I thought QX9650 and QX9770 don't come in E0...only the Q9650 comes in E0 but that's not extreme edition and multiplier is locked.

What are you promising yourself with an unlocked multi?

I'm hoping for 3.9-4ghz...I've seen plenty of 9650 hitting 4ghz without problems under air on this forum.

Buy a Q9650...look what mine has done in the past...that was a q9550

Wow nice...well my Q9450 can't go over 3440mhz and i wanted an exterme edition that most definitely will hit 4ghz...the price difference betwee Q9650 and Qx9650 is almost meaningless..I think the latter goes higher than the first.

Definately not! The QX will be so damn hot!!! I think you won't hit the 4GHZ stable!
You'd better look out for a better board, like a Gigabyte UD3 or something - then your Q9450 will maybe hit the 4GHZ

Q9650 ftw, in case you want to stick with S775 mate... I had a very good QX9650 did 4Ghz deadeasy at 1.2Vcore under water (though 400FSB) 500FSB took 1.3Vcore for the same speeds with a lot of extra heat...
Ofcourse to go high with Q9650 you need 450FSB, I have no clue if your motherboard can do that... most happy Q9650 users are running them on Gigabyte EP45 UD3P, USB3 motherboards.... so maybe the unlocked multie of the extreme ain't a bad idea...

If the monetary difference is negligable, get the QX9770 definitely - assuming you're still keen on the unlocked multi.
Otherwise as stated the Q9550s should be quite abit cheaper - mine hit 4.2 without even breaking a sweat.
Also need to consider the thermal output of the chip under air.

I think your motherboard is holding back your OC, but if you must upgrade I would get an E0 Q9550. They are cheaper and pretty much guaranteed to hit 4+ghz.

go for the q9550 E0. it's the best choice by far...
i've one q9550 C1 stepping, and it does easily 4 ghz on water @ 1.35v and it can bench easily @ 4.25ghz @ 1.45v
i don't have any info on how much it should cost by now, but it should be damn cheap... i bought mine almost 2 years ago on Ebay and it costed 170€... so by now maybe you can get one for 100...

As I don't want to change motherboard, I like my DFI, I think i'll go for a QX9650/9770 for the unlocked multi to secure higher end results. IS it true that qx9650 C1 overclocks the same if not more than a qx9770?

Try and find a X3380, like the Q9650's big brother
9.5 multi vs 9.. I ran one at 4171mhz for over a year on air and that machine ran at 100% load 24/7

The X3380 would be awesome, but they are impossible to find and I bet they are incredibly expensive :(

Both CPU's perform identically on my 790i and require the same voltage to reach the same clockspeed.
The newer stepping is no guarantee that you'll get higher clocks at lower voltage.
I have an E8700 E0 stepping that will do 4.2GHz on 1.29v, whereas it takes around +1.50v on both quads.
How cheap is the QX9650?
