ATI/AMD outpaces Nvidia in discrete graphics market share

According to Mercury Research beancounters, ATI has managed to overtake Nvidia in discrete graphics sales.

Nvidia was traditionally the stronger player in the market and a year ago it had a 59 percent market share, while ATI was short of 41 percent. In Q2 ATI managed to grab 51 percent of the market, while Nvidia slipped down to just under 49 percent. As they say, what a difference a year makes.

Nvidia still has a decent chance to get back in the game with several upcoming GF10x products and the GF104. However, it is clear that ATI’s DirectX 11 lead has had a major impact on Nvidia’s business.

If we look at overall graphics sales, including IGPs and CPU-integrated graphics, Intel still reigns supreme with a 54.3 percent share. ATI is also going strong with 24.5 percent and Nvidia has to make the best out of 19.8 percent. Last year Nvidia’s overall share was 29.6 percent. Obviously, AMD and Intel will continue to dominate the IGP market.

Things are not looking up for Nvidia lately and the company has already announced that its revenue would not meet earlier projections.

nah, ati has always had low profits... idk why either, if you ask me, they dont run their business as efficiently as nvidia...

Congrats to ATI. They have proved flawless in their introduction of DX11 cards. Almost a year and still going strong with the cards introduced. You really have to hand it to them for turning things around.

Nvidia will do the same and the cycle completes.

I'm glad ATI has captured back some of the market from Nvidia. It shows that they're really starting to ramp up again and be competitive. That's important for a company that we want to survive and continue to create competition in the graphics market.

Perhaps, this is because AMD has quite some debts to pay? Or is that not included?

Ati even before they were bought by AMD made low profits compared to Nvidia and you can check Ati's performance separately in the earnings report so AMD's debt has nothing to do with it.

If you listened to CC you would know. They intentionally sold more mobile discrete GPUs with lower ASP and since they are heavily capacity constrained they did it on expense of higher ASP discrete desktop GPUs.

Why they did this? Because that also pushed their mobile CPU and chipset sales. They wanted to grab more notebook market share and they did.

The only thing that saved Nvidia in Q2 was TSMC. If TSMC could make everything AMD could sell, Nvidia would look much worse. If thats even possible.

Tajoh would disagree, since if TSMC doubled capacity it would double both their sales, according to him.

I wonder how much of this has to do with Apple's surge in popularity. If you look at the current Macs, there isn't an NVIDIA GPU to be found.

I think the fact that ATI does such small profits is the fact that the FirePro dont do so well compared to the Quadro and they're quite often the most profitable part. I guess it'll change with time as ATI are starting to pop up everywhere in market shares, etc.

MacBooks are where the action is at and I think that's still mostly Nvidia. Mac volumes are probably much lower. The surge in market share has to be due to the complete absence of anything compelling above $200 from Nvidia for a good 6 month stretch.

AMD can only get so many wafers from TSMC and a lot of them are going toward low margin notebook parts.

well deserved, imo, but the game can change quickly. i hope ati doesn't screw up southern islands and following architectures, else it'll be an easy game for nvidia to claim the leadership in market share again.

Nvidia has greater penetration of emerging high end markets (Telsa) and low quantity, high margin markets (Quattro). I think those are the main reasons, IMO.
