Which chip maker makes by far the worst DRAM chips?

I'm sticking with my guns and saying Winbond is by far the best and Elpida is the worst I've experienced.
GeiL based not on my own experience, but by watching more people have problems with it than other brands.
I've never heard of a lot of those.
I didnt even know some of those manufacturers were around.
I would agree that Winbond is the best. Geil isnt bad, but its motherboard picky.

I am not wrong just because YOU have had good results. I know their 4000+ is pretty good stuff but I am talking about GeiL memory in general. It hasn't had the best track record.Quote:

I too agree that except their pc4000, geil isn't the way to go.

My past experiennce with infineon chips is pretty bad, so I will have to say that they're my worst :)
And Kalway you listed Winbond as being one of the worst chips, and then you say that they are one of the best :p: Typo maybe?
That's just a list of all of the memory chip manufacturers I could think of and find. I actually did not include 3 large ones, Toshiba, NEC, Hyundai. They only make SDR parts. Silicon mountain makes DDR but I know no one here uses them. They garauntee CL2.5 on all of their RAM, though.

I was surprised when it's PC3500 will run @ cas 222, for the low $40's on 256 sticks.
I was previously buying geil for customers rigs, cheap and never had a problem.
But at least this isnt a "what's the best ram" thread!!!
Is GeIL even making their own chips still? Or are they outsourcing like corsair, mushkin, and kingston?

Kingmax will run 2-2-2-5 at any speed below its rated speed. For example, my Kingmax pc2700 ran 2-2-2-5 up to about 155 with 2.8v. After that it had to be CL2.5. They haven't perfected their BGA tech yet.
I'll try and post pics of some of those Misc. memory maker chips. I have some registered Oki 168pin dimm sitting next to me right now. Looks like 16mb (4x4mb).
Oh ya try to avoid Nanya at all costs too. They're in the same boat as Elpida and Infineon as poor performers. Hynix, Samsung, and Winbond seem to be the highest quality. Unfortunate samsung's DDR400 is the same chips they used on their DDR266. All they do is change the voltage requirements from 2.5 to 2.6 and raise the timings to 3-3-3. I think I found some hynix DRAM chips that are actually 4.5ns instead of the usual 5 I'm used to seeing. Samsung seems to be king in the VRAM arena, followed by hynix.
My Geil Golden Dragon PC3200, doesn't work above 231mhz 11-3-2-2. Too reach that, I needed 3.2V on the mem. Raising the Vdimm to 3.4+ didn't result in a higher FSB. And the mem isn't stable above about 225mhz. So I would say it is really crappy mem.
I borrowed 256 Simpletek from a friend and it burned up my motherboard...Talk about your bad sims. Huge scourch mark.:mad:

Most of these DRAM producers are capable companies. Winbond has been found in most "performance" memory for a while, and their chips are some of the leading overclockers. But each company is not without it's own hits. Hynix D43-series chips didn't get alot of play in "performance" DDR400, but is now found in most all PC4x00. Other companies are also capable of having a "sleeper" hit for the overclocking crowd, depending on how their product is used/marketed. The simple, easiest choice is Winbond for most of your overclocking needs. That or Hynix's chips used in PC4x00 if you want high latency memory.
Most all of the companies are focused on DDR2 and smaller fab processors that will come about in 2004/2005.

seriously tho, Infineon is rubbish, as they are for gfx card RAM.
all the others i've heard of, seem ok.

These seem to be the companies I've had the least luck overclocking the most with. Micron... wtf... do I suck or something? Some reason it doesn't like running the timings every other stick could run.
You are wrong yet you are not earlier they rebagged PC2100 as PC3200 theve done some not so great things like all manufatures. But like OCz they learn and since their newer range of memory they have done alot better, also one thing GEIL memory likes is voltage whcih can make them alittle picky on cheap boards.Quote:

Infineon PC3200 i hate still got the stick, picky and doesn't have correct SPD settings.
$42 shipped Newegg of course PC3500. No it's not Mushkin level 2 and your not going to get tight timings @ 500ddr. But i think i'll test its max today.Quote:

I've been using it in customers budget AMD rigs Cas2 settings. Think i'll give them a shot in my sig rig and see if they are really worth the Big $42 that they cost!!!

the kingmax pc3500 don't seem to do much better over rated speeds on P4 platforms from what i read ?

Ive got some kingmax 2700 also i use. it'll run 200fsb no problem in amd. I tried it also in my IC7 and no boot with it either.
i'll still be buying it for AMD though.

The mention of Kingmax takes me back to the day, when we were just starting to hit 200Mhz FSb on the KR7A-Raid. The good old standby Crucial PC-2100 would make it to mid 190's, but the Kingmax PC2700(one of the first out at this rating) would do 200 and a bit over with no sweat at cas 2.5.
Then came the venerable original Samsung TCB-3(which I kept for old times sake) that would do tight timings at 200Mhz-210Mhz on the KR7A-Raid.

You really had to juice that Kingmax pc2700 to make it over 200mhz fsb though... That stuff wouldn't do over 175mhz for me with 2.8v. Then again I got the stuff when it first came out... ah the days of KT333...
