[HELP]Noob needs help with water cooler .. please ..

Hello ..

I'll buy a water cooler, but I have some doubts ..
The hardware to be cooled is .. :

Core i5 750 @ 4.0Ghz
Maximus Formula III
Future GTX480 .. hehe

Below the components :

* Swiftech Apogee XT CPU Waterblock
* FB-EK Maximus Formula III Full Board
* Water Block for VGA Full Cover

* HW Labs Black Ice SR1 480 Carbon Black - 120mm QUAD
* HW Labs Black Ice SR1 240 Carbon Black - Dual 120mm


Here comes the doubts ..

1 - would change some component?
2 - What fan recommend .. Akasa Black Apache 120X25MM 16dBA 57 CFM or 120X25MM Scythe SlipStream SY1225SL12SH 37dba 110 CFM .. ?
3 - What will pump ideal for my system .. ?

so are you asking for a 2 loop system? either cpu + mobo or gpu + mobo ?

recent gpus don't run quite as hot as they used to ( 8800's 9800's etc ) especially if you go mcw60 + unisink you can take a lot of the cooling load off the GPU block as opposed to a full cover.

personally i like full covers, but if i was going to do a 3 component watercool ( ie. cpu gpu motherboard ) i would do 3 loops.

to tell you the truth i don' t think you need all the rad you are going to have, unless you are going to add another gpu later ( or two ) i don't see the point in having 6x120 to cool a dual core cpu mosfets and 1 gpu? your northbridge and southbridge are in the cpu.. the only real 'northbridge' on the board is a pci-e controller. but of course there are still mosfets to cool that would be beneficial.

if you're set on 6x120 rads that's xtreme. and i can stand by that. but i would just buy a couple extra feet of tubing and try out which is better :)

you could do 3 loops, be cool and ... and ... and... well you never said if you had a big case or not, so unless you have the rads already that's what i would say to do.

and on the fans i would say the black apache is some bs. less than audible sound + 57 CFM?? doesn't really sound accurate. sounds like silenx.

For those black ice rads optimised for low/silent airflow use fans that are more silent. Scythe Gentle Typhoons or Yate Loon D12SL or Noiseblocker Multiframe. I am shure that fans choosed by you are louder or give less airflow at same rpm then these three or ran at higher rpm. For pump use some variety of Laing DDC-3.25, eg. made by koolance or swiftech.

Understood .. but the core i5 750 is not quad core .. ? I'll cool it, the mobo and vga .. future plan to use 2 or 3 vgas .. So now I will prepare the system with 6x120 and 7x120 maybe even one, if necessary ..

I'll buy a Cosmos S .. and I think I'll get the same Apache .. are rather quiet and efficient ..

Ahh .. the store that I buy do not have this pump .. which of these three would be the best .. : Mcp-355, mcp-655 or DP Danger Den 1200?

1) don't look at fan vendor specs. Those mostly are made up lies to sell product.
2) by more independent test results such as by Jordan/Vapor/Martin most silent or with most cfm at particular dB were scythe gentle typhoon, noiseblocker multiframe, nexus (IIRC basic?. anyway, it's rebranded Yate Loon D12SL).

So generic advise would be to use Gentle Typhoons. imho better to buy 1800 rpm ones, and run them with lover voltage at ~ 1000rpm. That's way you'll get silence and have room to increase performance. If you lack money, Yate Loons are nice choice. Very cheap, especially if bought in batch. Pitty though they are sleeve beering (not lasting very long when working horizontal position).

Slipstreams are not made for use on radiators. Follow Churchy's suggestions.

A Cosmos S will not hold the rads you want. If you are only doing a Core I5, and 1 GTX480 or GTX260, you don't need all that radiator. A Cosmos S can hold a 360 with no cutting to the case and a 240 with cutting to the case. If you don't want to keep everything in the case, but mount a radiator to the outside of the case, then that doesn't matter.

There are also other radiators out there that perform as good if not better than those SR-1s for cheaper. Thermochill, EK, Magicool/Swiftech, XSPC RX series are a few. Those SR-1s do look the best though. :)

You don't have to do dual loops, but you may want to do dual pumps as MB blocks do add restriction. Everyone has there personal perference on pumps. End of the day, you will be fine with a MCP-655(D5) or a MCP-355(DDC). The DDC is smaller than the D5 and less expensive. The D5 vario has a speed control built into it.

I would say to get the DDC as you will need 2 and a Cosmos S can get a little tight when watercooling. Make certain to get a pump top for the pumps too. EK, XSPC, and Koolance all make great pump tops

Do what this nice man tells you to do.

However, you may find it is difficult to mount an external rad on the back of the Cosmos S, because it has some retarded Plastic "fins" coming off the back. You will have to dremel/ cut those plastic fins, which will look like king crap, IMO. But you don't need to mess with the back, since you can easily fit a 360 in the top of the Cosmos S with no mods whatsoever, and then with a very little, teensy weensy amount of dremeling, you can fit a 240 in the bottom.

I see a guy here in the forum that had these same radiators, but he made the Cosmos S mod ..
He put the 4x120 at the top and the 2x120 on the ground .. I'll cool the mobo, the i5 and future 2 vgas ..

They have better paint, and will most likely require less flushing for initial setup.

T.C. rads can be a real PIA to get clean the first time around, I still favor them however.:)

Size depends on your case and if they must be inside. I say more/bigger rads = more Xtreme.:up:

My final solution for cleaning out my Thermochill.. Fill it with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and let it sit for 20-30 mins.. That was what finally flushed my radiator clean.

XSPC RX, EK, or Magicool might be good choices for you seeing you seem to be overseas.

You can use standoffs to help push the rad away from the back of the case so you don't have to worry about those fins.

I think I saw that worklog too, but i think it required some heavy modding. It all depends on how much modding you are comfortable with.

The pump tops do make a difference. The stock tops are not the best.

Where are you buying your parts from?

Personally, I'd swap out the over priced SR1's for MCR's (they work just as well, read the graph) of the same size and swap the MCP355 for a DDC3.25.
