I got my asus 5850 from newegg today and for some reason the default clocks are set at 850/1200 according to gpuz and afterburner. They are supposed to be 725/1000 correct? Is it a bug with the two programs?

725/1000, yeah. Really odd, these are the clocks of 5870...
i just bought the asus 5850 a month ago, and mine were the 725/1000
lucky you
does your still drop down to 175mhz when your at your desktop?
CCC says 850/1200 as does gpuz. Here is a screen shot

Bios version is ver012.011.000.006.034494 which is a 5870 bios I believe. Looks like Newegg may have sold me a card that someone returned.
No the card was sold as new which it obviously should not have been. I am just worried that if I ever had to return it for warranty issues they would not take it because of the modified bios.
Run 3dmark06/vantage/furmark and look for artifacts.
If it is artifact free and temps are 80 or less then it's a keeper.
Or you could flash back to the original bios.
Got to the original manufacturer's site and see if the card has been registered already too.
If it has - return it.
if you are worried then flash it to the original asus 5850 bios or return it to newegg explaining the situation and they will most likely give you another card
If everything is working fine then just be happy :) Run furmark or other stress program and see if it passes
see what 3d volts are, 5850 is 1.0875v old 5870 is 1.162 and new 5870 bios is 1.174. My card does 875/1200 on 1.0875v
I had it at 1.2v and 900/1200 today and after 6 min furmark temps were 71c with the fan at 80%.
using 5870 volts mine is good for 925/1300
sounds like you got a 5870 by accident hell keep it its a $80+ free upgrade you would be dumb to return it!
Funny ,, Maybe they just flashed it on accident at the factory..
5850/5870 use the same Bios practically,, MHZ clocks and Only shaders will be different if the VGAboard has same ram and voltage specs...
I have my 5750's set @ 850/1200.....
Returned three that wouldnt run at stock..Im so happy...
Just run it:D
To Do:
A. Run vantage 2 times on the 850 clocks and record the score, then run vantage 2 times on 725 and record the score. This will tell you if the clocks are actually 850 or if its a software malfunction.
B. SAVE THE CARD BIOS.
C. Set the default clocks to normal in ATI CCC. (IF YOU WANT TO)
I'm quite sure this is one of those "Overclocked" Edition chips that was accidentally packaged in a regular box.
You should be very happy if that is the case. Use it at 850 until it drops. Why? Because it came with those clocks -> Plausible Deniability.
