MCP355 dead after 12 days

Last night (3 AM), I turned on LinX. Water temps 25, cpu core temps 64/64.

I wake up an hour ago, PC is off. I am thinking, who the heck came into my room and shutoff my pc? I thought, maybe its in sleep mode..

I press the power button, what the.. it was shutdown. I said ok maybe someone did do that.

CPU Fan Error... Uh oh. I had connected my pump RPM cable to the CPU fan header. I look into the res, water aint movin.

This pump has been working for 12 days on/off since I first assembled my setup. Never ran it dry once I hear this clicking sound now but it refuses to move any water.



What can I do to bring this thing back to life now?

Did you check the molex connector? Sometimes those like to get loose.

Of course I did. Its getting power, the base is getting warm but thats about it.

Open up the pump and investigate the innards. Maybe something in there, but that may be wishful thinking.

What the.. why does it say 3.1 when i thought all mcp355s were 3.2? If I had known mcp355 are 3.1 I would have never bought this.

Ignore the printing/any stickers on the PCB. Laing has a long history of causing chaos with their revision numbers. Go by the actual solder connections instead. . .and to answer your Q. . .not likely or very easily.

Lol I was joking I am not gonna waste time. I am going to pickup another 355 locally send this one to RMA that way if this happens again I'll have backup.

Mine were not Swiftech, but they were the DDC 3.25 (basically the same thing)

I had 2 brand new ones die within 2-3 weeks of each other...I thought I was going insane.

Yep - I just came back to say the same thing, after seeing the link in the other DDC pump thread as well.

Don't think there is any need for major concern over these pumps failing universally.

Maybe I should add a resistor and reduce the voltage to 11v. My 12v isnt that high, 12.2 or so.

my bad
long story short: bought 4 DDC 3.25 pumps
two per loop

one completely died and would not start up after powering off the system, one would try to start up 3 times, stop, repeat...they were each on different loops..system was 2 weeks old when the first one died

replacements ran fine so it was not something with the setup

I'm wondering if Laing got a bad batch of pcb's as so far the "rash" of failures seems to be from the 4/09 production run. This happens even to the best of them.

I don't think that's the problem.
On the spec sheet the input voltage can range from 8 to 13.2 VDC.

Then again, if we're talking about power fluctuation, it's bad in almost any application.

By the way, anyone noticed that these DDC pumps spec sheet indicates max 60 deg C temp(140 deg F). Not quite sure if this is ambient temp or the water temp.

I'm sure no one got this kind of ambient temp.
Anyone got this kind of water temp while the pump is in operation?

u will never have a water temp that high i dont have a probe in so i cant give an exact figure but i have shoved a probe into the loop and an e6850 @ 4ghz and 58c the liquid was under 30c

and the 355 has the yellow wire on 2 pads were the 350 only has the one

Mine worked for less than 20 min, before it started to smoke and smell funny.
I ordered 2, one as a backup!

I think I have a suspicion as to why this happened... I have got a super high-flow loop. The water coming in to the pump in take is coming in FAST like you would never believe it. The XSPC res pump top is great but I think it is really pushing this thing to its limits.

These pumps are tested with the stock top, and with that I am sure they would never fail. Put them in these ultra-efficient conditions and they will suffocate. I am willing to bet every pump that failed had a res top.

My loop:

PA120.3 - least restrictive 3x120mm rad
Sapphire Rev. A - least restrictive waterblock
XPSC Res-top - highest efficiency DDC pump top

I would like to put in a flow meter just to see how fast the water is moving through it.

Any expert opinions on this matter? Because if this is the case we should no longer be recommending any res-tops in single block scenarios, or maybe even in any scenario.

Did u use sensor to see the pump temp?

I know that the water temp was maxxing out at 25°C. I am positive pump temp wouldn't have been more than 30-40C at any given time because everytime I felt it it was just warm to the touch, case has good airflow, and nothing is immediately below the pump.

Look at the burn pattern in the second pic. This is clearly an indication of the damage starting at the coils and workings its way to the regulator.

If the regulator had been first to go, it would have just melted and nothing else damaged.

Hmm, so you're saying that because of the extremely high flow rate, instead of the impeller in the pump actually moving the water, the water is actually turning the impeller in the pump?

Could any electronic expert comment on this?
