I have been doing alot of testing with the LSI 9260-8i and believe me, I love it!
I feel very deeply that it is probably the fastest pci-e raid card solution available today. of course some disagree....:ROTF:
However, recently LSI has released the 9211-8i, and upon doing a little research and comparison, I came to the conclusion that this card is merely the 9210-8i, but with a different port configuration. For people who have read the very popular toms hardware article, this controller was also featured in its testing model. Not available to the general public at the time, even thought the 9260-8i was. (I had the LSI for months before Tom's Hardware got ahold of it BTW:yepp:)
Note the very impressive speed and characteristics of the 9211 compared to the full featured 9260 in this link...http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...id,2388-5.html
The controller listed as the 9210 on there is the one i suspected of being the same as the 9211-8i. So i checked the egg and this controller is very cheap,, very reasonably priced.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-112-_-Product
so considering that a top flight raid card can set ya back upwards of 600 USD, $250 is a paltry amount LOL. I have ordered it and am having it overnighted here, and after checking its status tonight i am confident i will have it early tomorrow for testing. The reason this card is faster i believe is because it has a stripped down raid set, basically there is no raid overhead, it is just a straight shot to the board, with no cache overhead either. it does not do raid 5 or 6, only a very limited raid set.
If it is what i think it is, its basically a hotrod! Should be fun to toy with, but not have as much of an impressive feature set as the 9260-xx versions. However, for those guys looking to raid up some cards on the cheap, and get speeds WELL in excess of the ICH10R speeds this should be a great entry level/cheap product. the fact that it is SAS/SATA 6GB/S compatible should give it plenty of forward mobility, yet also with the processing power to absolutely monster the high bandwidth of current 3gb/s drives. After bouncing some ideas off of a few other 9260 owners, a few of us have gotten this controller for testing, cant wait to get started! The greek connection (tiltevros):D has confirmed with LSI support that this is in fact the same controller as the one in the review, so kudos to him for gettin that squared away! should be interesting to see how this shakes out!
My testbed will be an 8 drive array consisting of OCZ vertex.
tiltevros testbed is going to have upwards of six intel SSD,
Biker will be testing also with his uber array, consisting of agility drives, so we should have all the bases covered, hopefully its good, but either way it should be fun!!
Here is some more info on the controller for those interested...
