Bad SSD Performance of X25-M G2 80GB with AMD SB750, especially at 4k

Hi Guys,

I don't know why my SSD performs not very good with my AMD SB750. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit and using AHCI with AMD Catalyst AHCI driver 9.10 and my benchmark results are very bad, especially the 4k Performance which should be good with Intel drives. There was no improvement in changing cables, SATA slots, using Microsoft driver, updating firmware. I don't know whats wrong. I also tried the Intel Toolbox with Microsoft driver and performed TRIM once but no increase in performance. Nearly 50 GB of free space left on the drive.

The benchmarks you see here were taken with a freshly installed Windows 7. Everything I tried had nearly no influence on the performance. 4k values seem very low to me.

Maybe someone can help. Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly, SB750 is just horrible for SSDs.

the 4k numbers are supposed to be vary low but i dont remember how low they are supposed to be, did u try using ide mode

Didn't try IDE mode yet because I didn't want to mess with my Win 7 install.

EDIT: Just did benchmarks again with C&Q (left) and without C&Q (right). You see the difference.

@OP. Something is very wrong with your 4K read/ writes on AS Benchmark, but something is even more wrong with your access times. That I would guess is your problem.

For comparison this is what I get:

4K:
------------------------------
Read: 23.13 MB/s
Write: 45.95 MB/s

Access Times:
------------------------------
Read: 0.077 ms
Write: 0.091 ms

Yes that access time looks closer to a raid setup , AMD & Nforce chipsets are lackluster compared to Intel chipsets.....

According to Tony from OCZ, who has done extensive testing, the SB750 is basically the same in performance as the x58 chipset. So I dont know where you guys are getting your info from on AMD being teh suxor.

Well I am not the only one with that problem on SB750. I have found more users with bad performance and access times. Here is a link to a thread in a German forum: LINK. Something must be wrong here, maybe something in Bios or Windows 7 64 Bit. I am still curious.

Looking at that site all of the benchmarks are showing bad access times.

I found a review that compares performance of different boards with an intel ssd raid set up. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...0a,2374-9.html

It seems write latency is bad on the SB750 but it doesn't seem to really explain what is going on with your set up. I'd dump the board if I was you.

Well maybe it is just Intel based drive then, cause Samsung based drives work great, I actually got better benchmark scores than Intel users with the drives. Both OCZ Summit and Corsair S128 drives.

Which if you think about it, why wouldnt Intel optimize their own drives for use on their own chipset? I suppose it should be obvious that these drives would just work better on Intel computers.

You check the mobo site for any BIOS updates? I'm sure we'll be getting some across the board soon for all models to try and optimise SSD.

DonGeilo is the only one with decent SSD speeds using SB750 I have seen benchmarks. Bios is the most recent one.

Even those 4 k writes are a bit slow. I get around 73MB/s on both an 80 & 160GB drive. (On an ICH9 mobo)_

I found the cure now. The problem is C1E. Disabling and leaving C&Q on gave me this benchmark:

My AMD RAID ROM BIOS are 3.0.1540.44 but my drivers are current, I am current drivers in devicemanager, 3.100.1540.86. But I remember way back with my Asus A7N8X Deluxe that I had a similar problem and that it wasnt mixed until I installed new RAID ROM BIOS, does anyone know of a new RAID ROM BIOS? Anything would help as my RAID performance seems like I'm only running 1 SSD, and I didn't pay $300+ for decent performance -.-

O, 1st post but long time reader and usually I do not post on sites unless I've tried everything, and I've been a PC Tech for 5+ years, but like everyone is saying, the drivers/bios suck. So far my "Dragon Fusion" experience is mediocore at best, and with a grand total of over $1,600 (including peripheials I didn't list) I should have crushing speed, lol. I know a few items could be improved but damn ...

Forgot to add I'm running Vista Business 64 bit with all SSD tweaks applied (service/policy/etc) And BIOS reports that my SSDs are on port 1+2 and my WD120s (Also in RAID0 for games/Apps) are on 3+4 but while in RAID utility and in RAIDXpert SSDs are on ports 1+3 and WDs on 2+4 ...weird but not the 1st time I've seen this on a system so didn't think anything of it.

Playing around with settings netted me this ...

Better but not what I was expecting, from reading I should be hitting 350ish / 250ish, long way to go to reach this, I'll keep everyone up to date as I am really trying to figure this out but in the end I'm sure it's just ROM BIOS / Drivers >.<

Just found this too, new vista driver 3.1.1540.127, going to try it, wish me luck
Well, I tried to install the new drivers and it says I already have the most up to date driver, even tho its .127 and .86 is installed, so maybe it's the RAID ROM BIOS? driving me crazy, lol. Gonna call it a night and hope someone reads this and gives me some insight. "AMD RAID Controller" took new driver, "AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller" didn't. lets try a reboot, lol.

I WANT DRAGON FUSION POWER ...lol :P

I broke 280 I guess :P But others dropped, I'm sure it's just the random up/down factor, lol

Noone has any input? This seems a serious problem with one of the most popular AMD AM3 boards, I thought this would receive much more attention so that we can work together to figure this problem out -.- Or maybe we'll just have to storm AMD and demand better BIOS/Drivers ...lol :P
