Maximus 3 Formula and LLEs, oh my!

A new style block has been used for this motherboard. Hopefully motherboard mounted pictures will be available today! Mounted it Friday and it fits like a glove. :D

And this is whats excited me for a while. Plate heat exchanges :eek:! They seriously look like candy in person. I can't wait to see what people do with them!

HX plates needs to be brazed.. not connected by g1/4

im so lost on why you guys made HX plates with G1/4 fittings. :shrug:

As for the FB block... AMD users rejoice... You got a excuse not to migrate to intel now. :rofl:

Ease of use, they could be used in more than just phase change systems.

(And yeah... we wanted to prove that we weren't anti-AMD :p:) --irrelevant, see edit :eek:

Well heres your problem.

The HX plate is used when you use 2 different mediums to exchange heat.
The problem is the medium's that they usually use with a plate is gas and liquid.

The gas section has to be brazed. There is no way an oring will provide the resistance in pressure for the HX Plate.

The liquid i can see it being fine.

The only other solution i could see this working is if u had a super heavy liquid in 1 section, and normal water in the other.

But if thats the case, you might as well run th super heavy liquid on the cpu directly.

I don't see phase guys using it since they'll have to braze some part of it anyway, but I could see it being used for loops that use household/external cooling loops (like the guy who buried a ton of copper pipe underground, or the guy thinking of using the external 1000l reservoir, or anybody who gets flat-rate city water).

We use the LLEs on our PSUs to keep the internal liquid (very expensive, evaporates fast, etc) separate from the rest of the cooling system. V2-V3 brazed one of these LLEs to a phase change unit about a year and a half ago.

I like them because they open up a lot of possibilities (fish tank heating? :eek: what about "nested" loops? :confused:). I just think they could be a lot of fun, and easy to use, nice looking a LLE isn't readily available so I'm interested in seeing what cool things people can pull off.

You have one loop's liquid going through one side of the HX plate and another loop's liquid going through the other side of the HX plate. Whichever is warmer will transfer its heat to the cooler side.

For an easy example, look at Dean's fish tank heating example Put the water from your PC loop through one side of the HX plate and have a pump running the fish tank's water through the other side. Normally a fish tank runs cooler than a PC's water loop, so you can use it as a heater for the fish. Preferably tropical varieties. ;)

What about a glycol mix on one side, water to your loops on the other. You know how cold it gets in Minnesota during the winter? Weather gets warmer, shutdown the glycol loop. Water to water heat exchange is a lot more usable than your short sightedness here.
