Most s775 coolers fit s1156 motherboards

Posted with in the mod-section as well, but after a little research, looks like no-one actually thought of this till now, so putting it up in the news-section as well.
If not news-worthy, please feel free to moderate away.

So Intel now has S775, S1156 and S1366, all of them incompatible with each other, yet nobody complains about that?.

AMD had 939 and AM2 at the same time and it was an unforgivable sin. Then came AM3 (AM2+ is just chipset related, doesn't really count), which has backwards compatibility at least from one side to the other, and once again some found it to be an unnecessary pain.

*Why* is that?

Maybe since Intel has done this since the begging is nothing unusual or unacceptable for them :rolleyes:...

I think you'll find plenty of people moaning about it.

The saving grace is that mobo manufacturers have been putting S775 mounting holes on both LGA1366 and LGA1156 boards (Foxconn, Asus, EVGA).

It is annoying though. :shakes:

Hahah.. that's kinda funny 'cause you have the exact same oldie P4 cooler as I started out mounting on my P55 motherboard :p:

Yep. So far I've had no difficulty mounting a Danger Den LGA775 water block on 1156, so this doesn't surprise me much.

Intel's reasoning for moving the mounting holes such an insignificant amount remains a mystery to me.

But you do not have a backplate :) OK, you do not need it for lighter coolers but you would not even try mounting Utra 120 copper :rofl: (Unless you keep your system horizontally)

You could just make one, or buy a backplate when they come out.

So, it turns out that the TRUE is going to be mountable on yet ANOTHER generation of motherboards?

The Xigmatek in the video is 600g heavy and 159mm high

The TRUE Copper is insanely heavy at 1900g / 160mm

Someting like the regular TRUE at 790g / 160mm or the Scythe Mugen 2 at 870 g / 158mm I still think would do just fine w/o a backplate.

I would certanly seem so, yes. No need to get a MUX-120 if you know how to handle a screwdriver :up:

BTW I like the idea that there is a backplate attached to AM2/3 boards, would be cool if such an idea was developed for a universal backplate for the whole motherboard generation... Just add a heatsink and voila! :D

oh and just in case, id recommend adding a disclaimer to the video that people should be careful and not tighten the screws too much or it might kill their board...

when i worked at foxconn i actually tracked down the engineer responsible for it at intel and we asked him about this :D
he explained that they dont really think about mounting hole dimensions when creating a new platform, they design the new socket with electrical specs in mind first, and the socket holes then go wherever theres room left pretty much. they never thought it would be necessary or even beneficial to keep the mounting holes the same... :rolleyes:

Do you guys think/know if an old D-Tek FuZion with the oldest mounting kit will fit in any of these boards?

Hmmm I have the EvGA P55 with the both the 775 holes and the 1156 holes. Funnily enough I have the xigmatek S1283 3 pipe cooler as well. It didn't dawn on me to remove he push pins .......... I got the 1156 bracket from Caseking in Germany:shrug:

I guess the reason qhy this works with coolers that used push-pins before is because the holes for the push-pins are quite wide. On the Fuzion the holes are small though so it won't work, or the screws will sit at an angle which isn't good for the board.

With the screws not sitting straight you won't get the kind of mounting pressure that you get with them straight, I can't say if this will affect cooling performance significantly though.

Well could also just enlarge the holes in the mounting plate.

I tested this method for TRUE and Titan Fenrir a while back, and used a similar method for the i5 System I had reviewed in PCFormat. XSPC showed me the prototype of the plate (Oval hole fits 775, 1156 & 1366) for Delta V3 and I used a Dremmel to replicate it on our 1156 water cooled systems. I can see this as being the way most companies will go.

The GENE does _not_ have mounting holes for 775, but the EVGA P55 micro has holes for both 775 and 1156.
