Introduction

After having become a little disillusioned with FaH, (long story, don't go there), I've switched my resources to boinc and joined the XS team as my ex-folding team doesn't have a boinc team. Hope you don't mind! ;)

I currently have 3 machines running GPUGRID WU's on the GPU's and World Community Grid WU's on the CPU's. (Currently running 18 CPU and 12 GPU processes.) I'll be adding another monster by the end of the week. A pair of Xeon W5580's and another 4x GTX295's. I haven't really got a clue how the points system works with BOINC, other than points are generated. I assume some projects are preferred as they generate more points than others? Any pointers would be appreciated. (All my machines run Linux, so I'm possibly a little more limited in the CUDA WU's I can crunch compared to Window$.)

Also, make sure you are running 64bit because it will give you 10% more points over 32 bit.

I appreciate the tip. But yes, I'm running 64 bit. (Wouldn't dream of running 32bit. That's so 90's! lol.)

I'm reasonably versed in maximising points through overclocking hardware and configuring the kernel scheduler. I hack a little too. I made a few small changes to the boinc code I downloaded yesterday to lock CPU affinities, based on my experiences with FaH and already started figure out what effects what, in the boinc client internals, like debts and on_frac.

Welcome to the asylum, Jack. You definitely sound like you qualify, in the xtreme. That is a good thing, we love over the top types here.

Sounds like you will be a fine addition to the effort here. There are many xtreme type folks here. We look to benefit from your experience and hope you pick up stuff from us.

As to BOINC, points, projects, etc. GPUGrid seems to do really well just for raw point score. However, comparing it to crunching WCG is apples to oranges. There really seems to be no equivalence possible unless we knew the guts of how each project scores. Berkley gives a rough guideline and each project implements as they see fit.

For WCG, most of us pick what they are interested in curing. For me, I work the cancer projects very heavy.

I run WCG, GPUGrid, and also still fold on our folding team here. I run a stable of 68 CPU cores, all overclocked on WCG. (Although, perhaps I should report that as 72 threads since I just put up my first i7 860 rig yesterday.) The rest are kentsfield rigs and one dual harper. Most of these rigs are currently on another account helping out a friend. For GPUGrid, I run seven 260-216s. For folding, I run six 260-216s and a couple of other smaller cards.

One point about points. WCG points are 7 times Boinc points. At the WCG web site the points are 7 times what they are at the stats web sites. :up:
