http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...INK/linkxs.png
Hi everyone! Welcome to my first scratch build. After seeing Thorkon's build of a Black mage over here. I thought it would be cool to create an 8bit link from the legend of zelda.
Construction/Materials
- One Thousand 1" wood cubes
- Elmers wood glue
- Clamps
- Lots of patience :)
Hardware
- Zotac 9300-itx Wifi
- E8400
- 4GB Corsair DDR-800
- Seasonic 350w 80plus SFX Psu
- WD Caviar Black 1TB
After about a month of designing/tweaking in sketchup ive come up with this.

Nice. I like the idea of having a 8-bit computer case! I'm not so keen on the zelda idea. But very imaginative to say the least.
-
I know you already said your going to use wood blocks but, Have you considered using Mega blocks?
http://www.megabrands.com/Shop/Brand...b_Classic_255/
Much bigger and cheaper than Lego blocks, I say it's a a great alternative
-
Whoa ... this looks like quite an endeavor. Looking forward to updates.
-
Crazy! Let's see how it turns out! :D
Any idea how / where you are gonna place PC parts yet?
-
That would be a nice addition on a living room. An unsuspected pc case for onlookers.
-
Except... Zelda wasn't a computer game...
-
Great :) Reminds me of a Lego build I have seen, but with the "block size" you are going to use, I can't wait to see more :)

Thanks for all of your comments. Sorry for not taking too many pictures. I was in the "zone" gluing these blocks together. The blocks are 1" cubed and i have some pretty good ideas for component placement.
I started building the head, layer by layer from the bottom up. I used an old case sidepanel on a tv tray with some ultra kaze 3000's for quick drying, lol. Here are a couple shots with the head about halfway done. (excuse the mess)

For a more "Pixelated" look, it would be better to paint the blocks before assembly. If you assemble first, the paint will collect in the cracks and look a bit messier.
-
@3Z3VH - i actually tried that with a few blocks and because some of them weren't completely 1" cubed, it left some gaps and some with glue in between.
update: Head Finished!
wow it turned out really well. it was pretty hard to paint in some places with the brush i had (not the brush in previous pics) so i had to get some tiny brushes for touch up spots and corners. I know you can see the lines in between blocks but i kinda like the look of it.
anyways here are the pics:

Hey man, i'm the black mage guy :D. It's looking very good! one of the few things is to make sure you have enough room. I BARELY have enough room for all my things in the Black Mage. You may have a easier time as I see the mini-itx tag in the post now. I ended up taking out the media reader on bottom to fit in a new large graphic card. I like the lines in between the cubes as it gives it a more pixelated feel imo. Can you list where your going to put some of the parts (fans, dvd drive, etc)? If you have any questions I would be happy to answer any that I might be able to. Oh and the some cubes are ever so slightly bigger than other cubes are a pain in the butt to deal with :D
Keep this updated, I'm curious about the progress!
I'm gonna be working on my new 8 bit mod in a few weeks (1-Up Mushroom HTPC with a mini-itx board)

sorry i havent updated in a while, been really busy this last month.
Hey Thorkon! thanks for the comment. a 1up mushroom would be killer cant wait to see it.
I will have steady updates rolling in this week with plenty of pics of the hardware and the rest of link.

I'll be following this build. Awesome idea.
-
Very cool idea. Where did you get the 1" blocks from? I haven't exactly looked for them before. ;)
-
-
Pretty awesome by the looks of it and it looks amazing at that size. Keep it going :D
-
So is the I/O panel gonna be his butt XD
I'm sorry I couldn't resist. Awesome project though. Better than I can do:(
-
Would it be possible to route the wires through his feet, into some sort of stand? That way, he'd have a normal butt.

Subscribed, this is awesome
