Best client for Core i7's

Finally got the SMP client working but not sure if it is the best client.
Was reading a F@H Tweak Guide on Extreme Overclocking it indicated that the regular console client is better for HT CPUs.

So what is the best client for a Core i7?

for an i7 smp is by far the best now with smp there are options and they go like this

1 - Best points Linux/OSX based smp client native not a VMware client
2 - Next best points Linux based smp client using VMware Linux client on another OS such as windows
3 - Best windows option without using VMware is Windows console based smp client
4 - Final windows option with least points Windows system tray smp client

You will far more points using any of the smp option over the standard cpu clients even running multiple clients one per core.

WFO is the I7 points whore the last post i seen was around 9k but to get those kind of points i think you going to need a linux base os like ubuntu check out the
ppd in I7 then check out ubuntu i think you will find the results interesting.:) lol shadowtester is the man you need for that he beat me to it

Every link or reference to this gives me a 404 page not found error.
I have tried several sources and google still no luck.

Are the links still good?

I'm getting 6400-6500 ppd on a stock I-7 920 running 4 smp clients in VMware. These are set to low priority so I can run 6 GPU2s at high priority and max out the points. This rig is slated for water-cooling the cpu with a PA 120-3. Then I'll OC and probably get 8k + ppd from the smps. :)

I know! That is why I am trying to get my rig setup.

First I can not get VMware Workstation to install. :rolleyes:
Seems Vista 64 Ultimate just will not let it install.

Secondly I can not find the notfred bootable folding client. :mad:

That is why I am trying to get some assistance.

A little help please.

Well decided to start over again.
Vista 64 Ultimate was giving me all kinds of pain.:mad:
So I am wiping it and install Windows 7.
Not sure if this will be any better, but it can not get worse.:rolleyes:

If I did not like FPS's so much I might have even gone straight to Linux, but I am not that much of a Folding addict yet.

Any problems with Windows 7 and VMware or GPU clients??

I don't know what version of VMware Workstation you have. :shrug: Version 6.05.109488 works perfectly in Vista 64 (standard through SP2) and Win 7 all betas and the RC. :yepp:

Edit: Workstation works. I've had no luck whatsoever with VMware server due to unsigned drivers.:shakes: One other option is to create guests with vmware server on and XP machine. You can copy the guests to a Vista 64/ Win 7 64 machine and run them with multiple instances of VMware player. Or so I've heard. I haven't tried that.

Had the latest VMware Workstation.
There must have been something wrong with my Vista 64, Windows 7 64 and XP 64 because none of them would install the VM Workstation. Very strange.

So I went back to good old reliable XP Pro /SP2

Do you know if the notfred bootable folding client links are still good??

I'd say your Workstation install.exe was corrupt. Zero issues for me with the above version. Do you have Virtualization Technology or the equivalent enabled in the bios?

Well I have good news and of course bad news.
I was able to reinstall XP Pro.
Got the GPU clients running.
And surprisingly the clients actually make the GPU go to the higher clocks.
I could not get the cards to do this in Vista or Window 7.
Also in Vista or Windows 7 if I raised the GPU clocks at all the client would start throwing error, so I had to set the clocks at minimum just to get the clients to run without throwing errors.

Well so much for the good news.
Have to do a lot more updating before I can see if the VMWare Workstation will load and I can try to get the SMP clients running.

Still have no idea if the links to the notfred bootable folding client images are good. Can someone check this?
(Updated - Was able to check from home and the links work. Was able to get the folding client)

Update

With XP Pro 32bit install the Graphics cards run at a much higher core and memory clock without throwing errors. In 64bit I could not raise them above minimum speeds without throwing errors.

As for the Linux SMP clients they are working great. :up:
I installed VMPlayer and followed the guide that YMAA pointed me to.

Even though the guide kind of says that you have to be running a 64bit OS.
I have had no problems.

With two VM Linux SMP clients running and GPU clients running the system is very stable and PPDs are up to 9000+
Will have to see how it works in the long haul.

Looks like I found the right mix. :D

First full day with Linux SMPs

Well today is the first full day with the Linux SMPs that YMAA pointed me to.

9AM and already at 5K got to love that. :up:

* 3PM and only up to 6k, still looking good but slow.

Looks like I am going to break my daily best or 7,357. :D

Had to reboot the system this morning because FAHMon was unresponsive. :shrug:

But other than that the system have been rock solid.

Clients have not thrown any errors and are extremely quicker than the native MS clients.

With the VMs, if you get an error that says it passed the maximum size of the disk or something, just ignore it. Notfred designed the VM with a smaller virtual hard drive than the A2 core needed, so it will likely throw an error at some point. It doesn't affect PPD in the slightest, so don't get concerned if you see that error.
