The NAR res (diy)

There are so many post here showing exquisite craftsmanship and beautiful things. This is not one of those posts. To be honest I feel guilty polluting the forum :( .

My first attempt at making a reservoir, indeed my first attempt at making anything out of acrylic, is to say the least a bit messy. But it doesn't leak, it does 'fit' and it is trapping air, viewed in these terms I consider it a success :)

So, with no further ado I give you the NAR (No Angle Right :D ) Saddle res.

This is the Saddle part, it's designed to fit over a TC rad. Well, the actual design is for something else but this is a main feature allowing use of a top mounted rad while allowing the res to still be at the top of the loop.

A major problem is the height of the top section. Roughly (oh so very rough :( ) equal to the thickness of a 25mm fan it means there is little space for the air trap. I placed two horizontal baffles in this space and designed the flow area to match that of 1/2" tube. It's a close call but in testing the space is just enough provided the res is sufficiently filled. At 198mm wide it should fit within many cases.

Well there you have it. As you can see from the finishing, or lack there of, this is execrise in all the wrong ways to construct with acrylic. In fairness all I had to hand was 2mm acrylic sheet so some of the mess can be attributed to having to make all the sides double skinned.

If anyone's interested I'll post some better pics once I take it out of the loop.

Oh, the design if free for personal use. In the case of commercial interest :rofl: please contact me directly and then seek psychiatric help - I probably need it :D

that is cool i bet you could make a mini on the go wc rig out of that

use lexan next time, or optical quality arcylic, that should net you some more "see through" results, personally, if it works, its a success :up:

Nice work, but I don't see the point that you have to have the res at the top of the loop. Even when you have the res at the lowest point, unscrewing the cap will not spill any water, whether on or off.

I like the idea of the mini wc system, there's not much space for a pump but perhaps an Archimedean screw would do the trick :D

The point ? Good question. I wanted to make something, I've never owned a res before and this idea got stuck in my head :) I've learned that a 1/4 NPT tap will do the trick for G1/4 fittings, that working with acrylic is both a pleasure and a pain, and I've been able to observe how efficiently the water flow is able to wash out any trapped air. The latter is very impressive, given the long, thin horizontal top section well above the outlet even a small air gap of a mm or so would be reduced to a small bubble. Knowing this I feel better about the idea of mounting my rad horizontally but sticking up, if you know what I mean, like '|' instead of '-' . All this is of course common knowledge but I'm always happier when I can prove it to myself :)

A quick note on lexan: I live in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. I can buy alcohol on every street corner, sex on every third corner and the local diy shops have a selection of over 100 door knobs to chose from. Basic materials are a totally different matter :( there's no demand :( :(

Nice! I love DYI, even when its not pleasing to the eye. It's the functionality that comes from working out a solution to a problem. Having the reservoir above the radiator (higher point) should make bleeding easier. :up:

Ok, the system it was in is now enduring the tortures only air cooling can provide courtesy of a Mugen 2 - I've never seen 45C on this cpu before let alone 50C :eek: but I need the rad.
