Guide: How to Insulate your mobo for TEC Cooling

Well as most of you know been working hard on my comp for the past few weeks and well Ive been insulating my board along the way… so I decided I would make a little guide out of it since there really isn’t a recent one around and I want more ppl to get into this and see how easy this is :D This is more of a follow the pics of what I did more than this is what you have to do and blah blah :p

Well here goes:

First a list of things you need to insulate your mobo:

1) NEOPRENE!! (LOATS OF IT) just in case

2) Conformal Coating

3) Dielectric Grease

4) Silicone rubber Adhesive

5) Liquid Electric Tape

First for any good TEC block or setup you need a good… back plate ;)

EK makes a nice one and it works perfectly

cut out a piece of neoprene to go along the back of the mobo so no air comes in there

Screws in and good to go

Enough with the backplate moving on to the back of the board

wipe the back of the board clean

now with the Conformal coating (if you have a tube this is how it will go)

here is a pic from ira-k(on OCN) which shows the conformal zone on the back of the mobo so this should help:

and well one thing which the EK backplate is not good for is keeping the neoprene down in the back so you can use some of the electric liquid tape

really nice guide, however its super outdated.

Theres a new method using gummy eraser, or kneeding eraser they found out on the phase section.

Works really good, and doesnt leave a nasty mess.

Hey NaeKuh, can you point us to that method? I have looked and searched for gummy eraser and kneeding eraser and cannot find anything.

Well, I didnt mean it like that! You've done a really nice job there.. The only problem is that I do not think you realize the mess you are going to have to deal with if you have to RMA that board. Not to mention, this is a really old way of doing things, especially if there are newer ways to get it done.

Don't be bummed about it. This is just one more example of the fact that no matter what you do in technology today it will be obsolete tomorrow.

you did a nice job with your walk through.
Now you need to do another one with the eraser idea. :p:
I have never used it and never heard of it till recently. Looks like a great idea.
Does anyone know where you buy the eraser stuff at?

I used to paint (but it was so time consuming i had to switch to a business school), and had that eraser with me all the time, Faber Castel makes those. Any decent art shop should have those.

this is stickied ans i am currently working on finding a bunch of these erasers to use them to make a guide for the eraser method and Im not bummed out this is for ppl who use TECs in a WB not for ppl with Phase... since with a TEC WB our temps fluctuate ALOT so we create more condensation so its better if you overkill it rather than just the bare minimum...Im gonna try the Gummy method on my BloodIron and see how it goes but personally I dont think it will work that well but you never know :D I am currently in the process of making a guide for ppl who want to get into using TECs and that should be done in a few weeks time so hopefully get another sticky :p:

Well I just did my cpu yesterday with the eraser method. One thing to note is that if you do as I did and place the eraser on top of the conformal coating I already had on my board, then the eraser is a major pain to remove cleanly. I tested this out on a small portion of my board and was disappointed that it didn't all come off. Guess it works better when you haven't applied any coatings at all to the mobo. Here is the only shot I could get off before my camera phone died. I also covered the entire section up to the cpu wasn't able to get a shot of it then, maybe next time I tear my board up I can do so.
