The case has a ton of room, and utilizes six 120's; two for intake, two for exhaust and two for pulling air out of the HDD area. It is going to be my first Lian Li, I have at least 4 other aluminum cases in use here but have always wanted one of these bad boys.

I've never used a Raptor before but a certain old man insisted. I think I'll probably like it.

Trying out the RAM, it was available at an obscenely low price. I may change it out later. Or get more of it. Depends on what kind of FSB I can get with it

Here is some pics of the coolers, they've been re-engineered to utilize Intel's standard mounting. Should be much less of a PITA than the older design.

at least they give you ribs on the screws so you can turn them by hand unlike the HR-01X's.

They have holes drilled through, from the top, and supply a "special" screwdriver. Pretty nice, looks like.

Did you find out yet if these Noctua sinks come with backplates? Not that you'd need them with that case ;)

Remember to buy a cooler for the mems, like the OCZ or Corsair ones. And please tell me Dave didn't make you buy a "new" old Raptor... please tell me you already had that one lying around.
By any and all means, go with the new Velociraptors! They are a) a lot faster b) way quieter c) need less power :yepp:
300GB and 150GB flavours are good, don't go for the 74GB one as it's substantially slower.

Bear in mind that HDD recommendation is only valid if you wanna work with that rig.. if it's gonna be a dedicated cruncher, get a cheap 160GB WD RE2 drive that just runs 24/7 perfectly.

Very, very nice. Can't wait to see that beast when its all set up. A handful more of these beauties and we should be in the blue all Fall long.

Unfortunately these crazed Austrians don't like me very much. Might have to do with last time when I called and asked if they'd give me a 100 Noctua P12 fans for a decent price, say 5$ each :p: :rolleyes:

Pretty sure the guy calls an automobile a CAH, though I've never actually heard em axtually say the word ( or rather, a bastagization of it ).

I had an an email exchange with a tech at Noctua back April or May looking for a solution to my insanely hot Clover rig. He suggested to wait until September. He said that they would be coming out with a much improved design. The man was good to his word; these were released near the end of September. They are so new only one of the 15 or so outlets listed in Noctua's list of US "where to buy" list had them so far. I'm glad I waited. They look like they'll work real nice. Pretty expensive, though.

Eventually I may get another pair for that Clover rig.

I have some Patriot Vortex coolers, someone around here recommended, that just came in last week. So I'm good there.

This rig will be my main back room rig, for daily use...

No, I didn't have that older Raptor laying around. I've never used one before.

I tried altering the order regarding older Raptor, but they said the order was already processed, boxed and in the UPS truck backed up to the dock. Nothing I could do could change that. I told them to take a look at my order history. Over 170 invoices dating back over 8 years. I said what can you do for me, then?

She told me to call her when the 74gig Raptor came in, and she'd issue me an RMA # and send me a shipping label to send it back. And give me a full refund.

Then she said place the order for the Velociraptor, and call her and email her within 5 minutes of doing so and she'd bump it up to free overnight. So I did that.

The best part is the frickin' thing was 199.99 yesterday, not including standard $7.xx shipping. Fricking high wouldn't you say?
Today, it's listed as 179.99, free shipping.

That's way cool as after I'd placed this order, and then seen your comments I went looking around and found the Velociraptor for $178.xx and free shipping, at ewiz.com. And I was thinking "if I try to switch it at newegg it will cost me $207+, and I know it's available, elsewhere, cheaper."

So, I ordered it from newegg; I imagine it will be here Wednesday.

So all's well, that ends well. As long as that free shipping label and full refund on the RMA goes through smoothly...

Halloween is coming and I'm going to start this year's franky contest soon. This is what I'm intending to put up for a prize, a month of this machine's labor in November, and I'll also also enter it in the contest..:yepp:

The Preview;

1. No case, it will be a naked "franky", maybe partly on a shelf, somewhere near the mass water cooler, which never did get cleaned up and re-racked to be pretty....:D

2. Qty 2 - REALLY, REALLY fast XEON CPUs.....

4. A bunch of this for memory. Would have liked to try out the Kingston sticks, but all the Asus and Skulltrail buyers seem to have glommed onto all the available supply, for now....

5. This 750 watt PSU. DDT had recommended these Silverstones to me sometime last year. I bought up a bunch of them, on sale, for the farm. They have all been rock-solid. Thx DDT! (Of note here is that they have the required 8 pin AND separate 4 pin 12vdc cable for the server type boards. Not the COMBO 4 OR 8 pin cable some other supplies are coming with. Take note here if you intend to build a dual 771 machine....)

6. Approximately 4 gigajillion fans of all sizes and shapes.

7. These CPU water blocks with this accessory. Fuzion2 blocks that are already 771 capable, right out of the box. Sweet. From Alex and Qouc at Petra's, of course. I HIGHLY recommend Petra's. Alex helped me out with the design of the mass cooler and it has been flawless for about a year now, with ZERO maintenance.....(Yup, I'm lazy! I will finally change the water when I put this machine on, maybe....) I really struggled with this when I saw the sexy coolers Scott is getting. I really think those are nice. I decided to go water with this machine since it will likely replace my main rig sometime. That is all water, and I suspect I'll have nearly this entire machine under water when I'm done playing with it.

OK, all the parts are inbound. Worst case, if I have a hiccup or hardware failure I can't clear, the prize for the franky contest will be two of my other quads for November. I hope to have my new entry ready to go by Monday, and I'll start the "franky" thread then. I hereby recuse myself from judging, since I'll have an entry in the contest.....MM, Sierra, and perhaps DDT can count the votes and judge.

I got a 300GB in my mainrig as well, and overall it even beats my 15k SAS drive :shocked:

@bob: Damn, seems like the battle for the fastest Dual Xeon is gonna be a tough one, seeing what Dave, C_D, STEvil, and serlv have up their sleeves - I like it :D

Nah, not too much. MM talked me into a Raptor. He hasalways sang the praises of them. But I'm gonna cheap and was balking at the price.
But after seeing you saying the new ones are way faster and then seeing at least 5 people, who've owned both saying the same thing I knew I had to do what it takes to get one. If I was going to get one at all.

You know my two favorite rigs are my Clovertown and my Q9550@3925.
The Clovertown cause it is just like butter, eight cores is just so effortless. And the Yorkfield cause it is so freaking fast. Well the idea of the best of those two rigs is immensely appealing.


We really do need a VCore mod. And man I hope the half-multi works.

Add another user on the "I can't live without my raptors" list.

Haven't tried the new ones yet.
