Well looks like another winner, bit of a shame that they used the QX9770 @ stock speed.
Still see one problem: availability
Maybe my post wasnt clear enough, soz.
Availability in the Netherlands, what i also read is that the 1 gig version is not produced as much as the 512 version cuz they need most of the ram for the X2's.
Also here in the Netherlands the prices went slightly up for the X2's, i can only gues thats because of the availability of ddr5.
HD4870 should have been produced with 1GB from begining.
yep , new games generation/engine consumes a lot VRAM , crysis warhead uses +700MB VRAM and only using 1280x1024 :yepp:
Crysis warhead
1280x1024

Well i had two Sapphire 4870's, the first one died and i got a replacement for that with a blue pcb.
Wasnt really happy with that cuz its damn ugly so i sold that card and now have the X2, if they didnt change the pcb colour i would have just bought a second 4870 then i would have been just as happy.
But yes they should have sold the 1 gig cards from the beginning , but hey dont they all make mistakes  @ Core 216
This is way better than the hexus review because we get to see how much of a difference the 1GB makes where it matters. Suffice to say, they don't have nearly enough titles that could do reach that limit, but again GRIDs performance is just astounding. I am guessing that game engine was designed for shaders from day 1 :yepp:
Another thing that comes off as really impressive is the power efficiency of these GDDR5 chips. Amazing! Double the ram and it only increases power consumption by no more than 5 Watts (its even less than that). If we were to go by that figure, that would mean all of the GDDR5 chips on that board combined use around 12W (5x2 + idle usage ~ 2watts maybe).
I am thinking maybe I will sell my 4870 512 and get this instead...
Grid was bugged for the 512mb 4870 due the low ram and high level AF so it ran out of ram and the framerate dropped bigtime, so thats the reason the perfomance hit for the 1 gig card is so big cpmpared with the 512 card.
Read the Hexus story again and you will see m8.
HD 4870 1Gb are all arround the market for some while...
Awesome. I knew waiting for these 1GB models was the right thing to do for my 24" 1920X1200. Buh-bye 8800GTS 640MB. :yepp:
I feel the same way. I think I'll just get an X2 with my next build though. I just want overkill from the get go now lol. What I hate most is that I payed $299+tax at Fry's 1 week after it launched instead of waiting a month to get it for $280 before the rebate + free shipping on Newegg.com.
Because of the performance difference between the 512 and 1gig 4870, it kind of shows that alot of the performance from the so called sideport is squat and has more to do with the increase in video memory.
They need to do a x2 4870 comparison with a crossfire 4870 setup. I suspect the advantage of the sideport is going to disappear.
They could have used 8.9 version for ATI... I am wondering, how much PPD will this bring?
the 4870x2 is better and cheaper than 2 1GB 4870s
Eh I knew that was gonna happen... but still the 4870 512MB is pretty darn powerful and should hold me for a while :) Plus I got it for $80 less than the 1GB model so it's all good :D
good stuff.
i had qualms about the 4870's 512mb of ram, and they finally fixed that.
I wonder why didn't they include the hd 4850 1gb in the review also? I am curious how much difference there is between them.
yes sideport is still not enabled I'll just post the link:
