790GX potentially more advanced o/c than 790FX ?

Due to FX's age might it be logical that the 790GX offers improved o/c potential compared to the "old" 790FX?

I need to make that decision when the boards become available.

On the other hand it might be the case that the 790FX did undergo a revision to be play in the same o/c league as the brand new 790GX e.g. 2007 790FX are revision A and 2008 790FX are revision B (i made that completely up)
Any info on that yet?

Furthermore both chipsets offer crossfireX with two PCIe x16 slots which was the biggest difference on previous chipsets e.g. 790FX vs. 770 or 780G i believe.

Another assumption is that the 790GX will appear as "not" high end compared to the 790 FX because of the nature of chipsets with integrated gfx and the fact that all boards with integrated gfx were aimed at the budget market in the past.:(

I just want to make the right decision to get the best overclock possible.

i expect these to be the different types:

790fx with sb600 3-4 x pci-e new boards will come with sb750
790x with sb600 2 x pci-e (don't see future for this one, for sure not since board partners messed up with vrm power)
780 with sb700 graphics onboard 1 x pci-e new boards with sb750 and probably onboard mem
770 with sb600 1 x pci-e

new board 790gx graphics onboard with 2 x pci-e

in the end the new 790fx or gx should oc the same, but fx offers upto 4 pci-e while gx has the onboard.

Rumored has it that the 790GX does in fact overclock better then the 790FX boards.

I think it's a given that the 790GX will overclock phenoms better than 790FX + SB600.

I think the more pertinent question is will the 790GX + SB750 overclock phenoms better than the 790FX + SB750?

I really doubt RS780D/SB750 would OC better than 790FX/SB750.

I dont hope so though, 790FX is in fact 'the better' chip. But I really doubt it, after all it's the SB750 fixing the things:shrug:

I also think they will almost equal in overclocking ability. I had both a DFI Ultra-D (nforce4) and a Biostar Tforce 939-6100 (integrated graphics) and the 6100 chip was every bit as good an overclocker as the nforce4. I was surprised. The bios will be the determining factor. I would expect a DFI DK 790GX/750 and a DFI 790FXB/750 to overclock almost exactly the same with the same bios. The new version of the LanParty UT 790FXB/750 with the 8 phase PWM will probably outdo both of them, but enough to justify the extra $100??? That will be the real question. ;)

The key to good OC's are in the SB. anything with a SB700/SB750 will OC better then with the SB600 (the SB750 far more than the SB700) this has been proven. of course im talking about a high quality board

What i actually meant was, does the 790GX have more advanced gimmicks for overclocking hinting the 6 unused pins considering that the 790FX had that pins a year ago(maybe first revision of that 6 pin feature).

So what might the 790GX bring to the table when it is brand new featuring a feature which has never been used by the public.
I know its speculation but i know that usually there are plenty of bugfixes and/or new features in every new released product.

Here would be an scenario:

-2007: 790FX was released including the hidden 6 pin feature in preparation for the SB7xx generation
-QA found some bugs with that feature but no one cared really in regards of release schedule since SB7xx was delayed or was delayed on purpose anyway
- the bugs will be fixed in another 790FX revision in 2008 to make it work nicely with SB7xx,
- since revisons are most of the time minor changes to the chipset therefore improved o/c support which might require a major change will be implemented in 790GX in 2008

Nor the 790FX, nor the RS780D, have anything to do with this whole happening?

SB750 should be pin compatible with SB600 as well IIRC. So I highly doubt the 790FX is getting a revision, or at least not for this.

If the 790FX gets a revision, it will be for 99% sure already on the SB750 boards.

So in either of these situations 790FX shouldnt have any problems.

And for the rest, as I said, 790FX should therefor be equal for OC's, but offer a lot more PCI-e lanes etc.

790FX = 65nm
780G = 55nm
790GX = 55nm

I would guess the IGP chipsets have a bit more potential to reach a high northbridge overclock because they are on a better process. They may put the 790FX on a 55nm process too in the future but that remains to be seen. I doubt there will be a BIG difference in O/C potential between the 790FX and IGP boards simply because the SB750 will have so much to do with the O/C, and the 790FX chipset itself has no problem hitting high HT speeds. The limiting factor will be your damn Phenom...

Allright, if the 790FX/GX is not directly involved in those o/c features then it might be no issue at all,i thought that the chipset is also directly involved.
But anyway 790GX might have some other new features related to HT, PCI but no one knows :)

The only real problem is that it seems there will be no enthusiast 790GX board..... at least i havent seen any yet

If you didnt see any boards, look for the new AM2+ boards thread I made somewhere in this subforum. You'll see there's going to be plenty of enthusiast boards for it.

RS790 FX Rev.B is enthusiast, RS780d/790gx is High end mainstream, 790X will likely be phased out with the release of 790gx (would no longer have a reason to exist). 780G is value Mainstream. RS770 is entry level, low end for AM2+. The 790GX, and 780g will be more the big thing targeted at OEMs, since those more or less allow oems to put out a system with a competent IGP, that can easily be upgrade to an ok gaming machine. In the case of the 790gx it can be upgraded to a beast of a gaming machine with an x2 card.

OC ability on the newer boards is going to be directly based off which SB it is. If it's an sb 750 board, it's gonna improve with the clock generator being on the sb. But, that mainly has to do with how the standard on board clock gens work today. More or less they're nothing more than an IC with a tiny shard of quartz crystal that vibrates at a given frequency depending on the current put through it, the vibration produces a high freq digital signal, that goes through a phase lock loop circuit to capture it at the desired frequency. One problem is that frequency can easily fluctuate depending on temp, emi, psu stability. Which is why when you look at cpuz you can see the base ht link speed go up and down by a couple tenths of a Mhz from time to time. If it's totally on chip with the SB750, they may have eliminated the need for a quartz crystal base system and gone completely digital, which would get rid of any issues with possible bad or wanky clock signal.

Now one thing I'm wondering about with the 790fx + sb750 thing is. What do those 6 pins enable?? Would be sick and wrong if that combo somehow enable CrossFireX to be used with 3-4 hd x2 cards with a new driver. Then you'd need like a 1200w PSU with one of those 385w booster packs that only supplies +12v voltage.

I have my Phenom+Crossfire rig waiting on these SB750 boards.

I wonder if the integrated gfx card in the GX can be used for physics.
That would be a nice boost to performance if the 790GX has the same OC potential.
