Reference DDR3 Micron SPD

Hey guys,
there still seem to be a couple of people around with the first gen micron ddr3 sticks from various mfgs that dont carry a fully compatible ddr3 spd. back then the spd spec wasnt even finalized and most boards would boot and work with any spd, no matter what it was programmed to. in the newer boards and with the newer bioses some older spds dont work anymore, or dont work very well.

Heres an spd which is pretty much microns reference spd, so it will work on any board with any bios. actually its possible that it doesnt work on a board or bios, but in that case the bios or board is to blame :D

oh and some people said this ref bios actually helped them reach higher ocs than propperly programmed ddr3 spds. i guess the ref spd is not tweaked at all and hence might let you reach slightly higher clocks.

btw, i re-setup my blitz extreme to flash the cellshock pc3-14400 and they flashed fine...

before (left) and after (right)

Has anyone actually tried flashing DDR3 spd dumps with SPDtool since it doesn't officially support DDR3 yet

I think I've flashed my modules with SPD tool ( or was it Taiphoon Burner ? ).
Kasparz, the old SPD worked fine on every board that I've tested apart from the Striker II Extreme.

ok, glad to know at least flashing works :)

Sure, even if SPD is 900Mhz 1.5V mb can't force it to boot at such speed with 333fsb cpus ;)

i can tell you in detail :D

1. hmmm still no final jedec spec for the DDR3 spds... every chip mfc programs their spds different...
2. since there is no spec, the boards ignore the SPD and calculate the timings themselves, interesting...
3. the first reviews and customer posts on forums of ddr3 show press and people complain that the spd doesnt show the kits full speed, some people feel cheated to buy 1600 memory that boots up and is recognized as 1066 memory which is a lot cheaper
4. asking around in the enthusiast community left the impression people dont really care as long as it shows the manufacturer, speed and timings.
5. some ddr3 kits that are beeing sold have impropper spd programming, but they work fine since the boards ignore the spd
6. some ddr2 boards have a fallback mechanism and ignore the spd and load their own timings if the spd doesnt work
7. seeing as there are ddr3 kits on the market with impropper spds, and there isnt a final spd spec and wont be anytime soon, its highly likely that even once a spec is out, the boards will need to implement legacy support and still boot fine with a fallback mechanism much like some ddr2 boards already do and use their own bios timings and ignore the spd.
8. ok... so lets just give people what they want, an spd that shows its ddr2 1800 or 1600 and its rated to run 876 or 766 timings.

in the end, we were wrong, at some point asus and the others started to read the spds and no longer use their own timings, probably since some memory vendors complained that their memory can run tighter timings but the board loads the same timings for every memory. this was to be expected and fine... what we didnt expect however is that asus and other mainboard makers ignored the fact that there were many ddr3 kits on the market with impropper spds, since they were programmed before there was a spd spec and in a time when spds didnt have to work fine. why they did this, and why others followed... i dont know until today...

i know that a couple of cellshock, supertalent, ocz and even corsair customers had problems with their older sticks with older spds as a result...

and kiwi, why would i recommend spdtool to flash ddr3 spds if it wouldnt work? :P

P.S. CPU-Z reads wrong XMP. All ASUS boards reads CAS8, Gigabyte reads CAS9 for XMP. ASRock won't read proper XMP memory speed at all. Intel vanilla boards won't clock anything at reasonable speeds. Even Giga X48T-DQ6 can't run 2GHz memfreq from XMP. So all that matters is that it works with ASUS excellent.

If 900MHz is XMP, then it will force. FSB/multi will be adjusted automatically. Actually, average people just by changing memory to XMP ready memory can overclock whole system without getting into bios. And that rocks if you're new to computers.

If 900MHz is XMP, then it will force. FSB/multi will be adjusted automatically. Actually, average people just by changing memory to XMP ready memory can overclock whole system without getting into bios. And that rocks if you're new to computers.

yes, IF it works, it can quite nice... but as you said, there are maaany problems with it, just like with epp.
and people who dont know what xmp is and how to oc their system, WILL oc their systems without knowing what they do, which imo is VERY bad... itll cause them and the tech support of the companies of their products a LOT of trouble :D

I have a problem with my CellShock pc12800 D9GTR, impossible to boot with 1st at a boot (problem with the VDIMM I suppose).

SPD for CSX 2000 GTR

Hi Kasparz:

Have you guys at CSX changed the SPD for the x3 6Gb kits of DDR3 2000 GTR? Or do you still use the same as for the Dual Channel type.

I'm having trouble running 12Gb in Rampage 2 even at 1600, I'm waiting for another BIOS release that could possibly enhance the compatibility.

I tried to flash my CellShock 12800 D9GTR when I flash an error message (about checking), but flashing successful :confused:

but in cpu-z I have the serial number to change everything else is identical, is this normal?

I have a Rampage extreme and my cellshock CS3222580 even with no OC, i get random crash on games. do you think tha flashing it will help?

btw wich micron spd should I use?

I have the same mem Kit as you, wich SPD did You use for flashing?
