Isopropil Alcohol With my Loop? Tips Please...

I want to built a Pentium 4 631 test setup and some subzero with my loop. I tried dry ice+antifreeze or dry ice+loop liquid, but both liquids are geting frozen and i'm having big trouble with a "frozen 5+ Ghz loop" :(

Recently bought some Isopropil Alcohol but dunno if it could eat my loop like acetone does... I need some advice please... Thanks...

This setup was filled up antifreeze but at -30° C, loop's geting entirely frozen...
It also becomes to a soft, blue icecream at -15° C...

try a mix of de-natured alcohol (I've found it at Lowes and Ace Hardware) and distilled water, start with 50/50 and see what happens, the lower your temps the more DN alcohol you'll need. add a cup of anti-freeze if you're running a mixed-metal loop.

Iso will work. For that matter so will Grey Goose(already has the water mixed in too). The problem with either is that they are expensive.;) Denatured Alcohol is the way to go. Don't forget the small bit of anti freeze for corrosion control.

If you got a leak, couldn't the very flammable alcohol be kind of dangerous? Besides that I don't see a problem with it other than it cracking acrylic.

Its pretty hard to light up a 50/50 mix. Don't believe me? Try it. In the safest possible way of course.:up:

I used %80 iso, %15 water and %5 anti cor.

It works prety good, but i leave my rezervoir's cap open if i push too high (5+ GHz) ;) cuz i want to let it evaporated... It helps lowering the temps, weird but true... i also don't smoke when i play with iso stuff :D

Why did you use so much alcohol? As you have undoubtedly already found out, too much will motivate less heat through the loop. You only want to add enough to keep it from freezing! Water is still the prime heat mover. All of this information is available here in these forums already. I suspect if you had done a little looking you would have come to this conclusion already. Please tell me you just had a lot of Iso on hand and you didn't go out and waste money on it. Why ask questions if you aren't prepared to follow the directions given?:brick:

I just want to see what happens and how it works, that's all...
Now i mixed more water and there is no icing signs... (%40 alcohol+%5 anticor+%55 distilled water)

Well, i got my tests without any trouble...
Mix: denatured alcohol %40+distilled water %58+anticor %2 (approximately)
I will not use isopropil cuz i am not sure if it eats my loop or not :rolleyes:

Iso is cheap? You can get a bottle for like 1.50 at any regular store, and from what I've experienced, loops really don't have a lot of liquid to them (unless you have a large res). Sounds interesting, let us know how cold you can get the mix down to. :)

We used cooler liquied, mixed with water in a bowl and underneath the bowl we had another bowl, which was bigger filled up with dice and the bowl with the liquied was then getting chilled...

Works flawless and we were seeing -20 or sth (liquid temp) and only dice in bowl, you could mix it up with acetone or sth like that to get things kicking...

Kool ;) my new chiller looks like yours, i don't use alcool anymore cuz not sure if it eats some stuff... and i got some nice score with it...

Sorry if I have misunderstood over overlooked something, but isn't it "water chilling knowledge 101" that if your looking for the lowest possible freezing temperature you should use methanol? Methanol will allow you to have the highest percentage of water (for heat carrying capacity) while keeping it liquid. methanol also does decently well in the heat-capacity department compared to the alternatives, so its ideal. Its also cheap and easily availiable. Just be aware that its highly flammable (even when disolved into water, if the methanol percentage goes above a certain threshold) and does evaporate a bit over time in case you don't have a closed loop. methanol like most alcohols and anti-freezing agents also tend to make rubber materials brittle over time (such as water-tight gaskets), so keep that in mind when using it with equipment otherwise intended for watercooling, or else you could get a leak weeks or months later.

Since I'm such a nice guy I dug up a link for you with a list of what the freeze-point will be for different mixes of water and methanol. You should be able to calculate something to fit your needs from this:

Just remember that the coolant immediately next to your cooling source can get colder than the average temperature of the coolant, so if your basing your decision based from the average temp you should probably overshoot a little bit just to be safe, and thus avoid ice forming on the surface of your cooling source.

i dont think iso would be flammable with a 50/50 mix(trust me i light the stuff on fire all the time at my grannies house) and the reason why if you leave the cap off to let it evaporate and the temps drop, is the evaporation takes some heat with it, hope i helped

i was using some iso/dry ice in a copper mousepot over the weekend it freezes up completely at around -26 to -30, so if your going for lower temps it wont work.
