Crappiest 9800GTX ever ?

I should'nt have used this title ( pretty much ruins the "surprise" :p: ), but I guess it's better to use a appropriate title, than misleading people.

Anyways, I've just Vmodded some 9800GTXs... and I think ( once again ) I've found the worst 9800GTX on the planet ( I'm surely the right person to pick the worst overclocking hardware out there ).

Max benchable ( AquaMark 3 ) GPU Core clock frequency is... 864MHz @... hold on... hmm... 1.412V ( idle voltage ) :rofl:

Next step ( 879MHz ) looks unreachable... 1.425V = nope... 1.435V = nope... 1.460V = nope... 1.475V = nope... 1.5V = nope... 1.525V = nope... :mad::shakes:

Idle GPU temperature currently 116F/47C

hhhhmmm mine dide max 864mhz on box air with 1.3vgpu load , but not any higher with more voltage .
on Ln2 @ -44°C 1055mhz core easy with 1.38vgpu :D

Gonna give the "good" one a try later on.
The "good" one does 864MHz ( AquaMark 3, 3D Mark2001SE, 3D Mark03, 3D Mark05, 3D Mark06, 3D Mark Vantage ) at stock voltage & cooler.

Sigh, my best 9800GTX max on stock cooling ( @ 100% + additional " 'cold air' feed" fan ) is 900MHz... that's 18MHz less than my 8800GTS at the same voltage :p: :(
Hope they get over 1000MHz on LN2... if not... get some cover, there'll be some 9800GTX PCBs flying around :@

I cant get mine stable above 850... And it takes 1.500 LOAD to get it stable at 850.

I guess thats worse than yours... But mine is a 8800 GTS, same G92 core though.

44ºC Idle in 28º Ambients, 56ºC Load.

BZ keep buying all the crap, amybe that way i'll end up with something decent :p:

If you don't like your "crappy" card send it to me. I'll be very happy with it although it'll be clocked at only 860MHz. :D

That's a sad story.
Most of them coldbug at around -50C.
Vince ( K|ngp|n ) is working with nVIDIA to fix those issues ( 9800GX2's also suffer from this ).
They've got a BIOS that fixes ( or drops the coldbug to a lower degree ) for the 9800GX2's but sadly it doesn't work on every card ( weird huh ? ).

So it's either controlled LN2, or dry ice without acetone.

P.S. Yeah a strong single stage looks like the ideal solution for the 9800GTXs for the time being.

Just reviving the thread for some LN2 run "notes" for the "good" 9800GTX.
I wanted to get "the feeling" of my new VGA unit from my dear friend Vince ( K|ngp|n ), so I took my best 9800GTX ( 900MHz on stock cooling, Vmodded of course ) and mounted the masterpiece a.k.a. K|ngp|n's Tek9 3.0
I left the rig to load windows and left it idling at desktop while "adjusting" ( lowering ) my GPU's temperature smoothly, to find out where it coldbugs.
The temperature probe was just touching the base of the pot ( haven't drilled it in yet ) [ without any paste, just the top of the probe touching the base ].
The coldbug struck at -53C.
So I was looking to keep the card under that temperature and as close to -52C as possible of course :D
I was in a rush, so I have done some crazy ( or foolish, or just xtremely crazy ) things:
1) No Vgpu monitoring ( just prep'd the card some secs before mounting the pot :D )
2) No special cooling for the hot hot mosfets, just a 120mm fan blowing towards them ( shouldn't be worried, but considering the fact that I could be pushing way too much voltage at a point, and the "low" temperature due to the coldbug )
3) Real fast and not good enough insulation ( didn't face a problem, but was way under my "standards" :D )
4) Bad QX9650 cooled by a Intel Q6600 box cooler [ low clocks ]
5) Low FSB & RAM freq ( my Striker II Extreme was giving me a hard time, failing at pre-tested FSBs & memory dividers/timings configurations )

Anyways, the card "performed" well I must say, I don't know if it can bench higher, but it did 1068MHz on the core for 3D Mark2001SE/03/05/06 [ the voltage should be within the following range, 1.4V < Voltage < 1.6V :p: ], guess we'll find out soon.

As for the Tek9 3.0... needless to say, it's the very best pot I've ever used in my 3yrs of extreme cooling ( Dry Ice & LN2 ).
There was little to none temperature swing in idle & load, I was able to keep the card's temperature at a specific value easily.
The unit truly rocks.
