No overclocking for mainstream Nehalem?

"We've learned that Intel is going change its policy on overclocking once it moves away from the LGA775 platform onto the desktop Nehalem platform which is currently known as Bloomfield which uses the LGA1366 socket. This will be the only platform from Intel which will overclock in the future, as the company is not going to support overclocking on other platforms.

Below the Bloomfield is the Lynnfield and Havendale processors, both using the LGA1160 socket. Neither of these are likely to get any overclocking abilities, although we're not sure how Intel can prevent third party motherboard manufacturers from adding overclocking features to their boards."

Yeah, right Fudzilla... as if Intel is going to uselessly angry some of its customers.
Intel doesn't have to support overclocking. The board manufacturers are going to. If Intel is going to somehow block overclocking on the chip, then they're just shooting themselves in the foot. A lot of the sales for the E2xxx series are due to their massive overclocking capabilities. The mainstream loves cheap, overclockable CPUs and if the only way you're going to overclock a Nehalem is by buying the expensive chips, then most of us are going to say "F U, Intel! No way are we paying 1000$ to oc a chip!"

Frankly... I think this is really just FUD's twisted understanding of the fact that the mainstream Nehalems are going to have the multi blocked, whereas the 1366 Nehalems will have unlocked multis. Just like it's been from the first P4 EE with the unlocked multi.

I say... move on... nothing to see here!

I'm sure there will be a work around for this.

i didn't think they ever supported overclocking?? don't they claim it voids the warranty?

I'm reminded of that screen in BioShock that goes something like "Sure the boys in Ryan's lab can make it hack-proof. But that don't mean we ain't gonna hack it!"

Intel doesnt have overclocking options in some of their el-cheapo boards bios allready, intel allready says warranty void if oc'd, so how will that be something new?

So long as the chips aren't somehow locked to a specific frequency, this isn't news. How many people use Intel boards anyways?

Or maybe intel is seeing that there is no competition and tries to make some more money out of it by selling chips that o/c in higher prices.

Well, this is already taking place with the lowering of multis on the less expensive processors, to some degree anyway. Aside from multis though, what can they lock down in the processor to prevent any board from overclocking the processor?

If this is true, then i would be happy to be AMD, step in and make something happen, this could be Pentium4 and Athlon 64 all over again?!?!

Lets hope that the overclocking crowd is a number they care about. On the other hand if we are a number they do not care about then there is no reason to block overclocking.

But after the Athlon FX I am never going to pay 1000$ for a CPU again...I rather spend my money elsewhere (i.e. high end speakers).

Intel won't do anything for overclockers (representing <0,1% of customers?) or against them anyway. overclockers and such forums are great for marketing purposes, so upsetting them won't do any good, if they were locked out they'd switch to something that overclocks anyway and wouldn't buy extreme editions.
so there's NO POINT in preventing overclocking.

Actually quite wrong. The sales of E2000 and E4000 series processors is mostly to OEMs that will never overclock their computers. HP/Compaq, Dell, Acer/Gateway, Toshiba, and Lenovo will never overclock the vast MAJORITY of their systems... and the ones that will be overclocked are the $899+ processors. I haven't seen any major company sell a factory-overclock mainstream/value/performance processor, but they're more than happy to sell a factory-overclocked extreme processor though. Those X6800s, QX6700s, QX6850s, QX9650s, and QX9770s are the ones that are sold specifically for overclocking. In reality, about 1% of consumer computers have user-overclocked components. We cannot look at reports from Anandtech and other sites about this type of thing--the average user will never overclock and will never build their own computer.

I bought an E2140 for overclocking it. There are thousands of other systems made by big companies that use E2000 or E4000 processors for their price and reasonable stock performance. That same stock performance that we cannot stand.
