just moved to x64 Vista...
running 4x1 dimms @1200
there are some pretty decent deals on 2x2 gb kits right now and I was wondering if the move to 8gb ram would be worth my time.
what would perform better: 4gb @ 1200 or 8gb @ 1000?

more than 4 gb is only going to help you if you do stuff that would require that much RAM. Outside of video editing and other graphics related work, not much benefits from that much RAM.
Bah. One word - SuperFetch. Max your RAM. Vista is smart enough to make great use of it, and many say SuperFetch is the single biggest reason to move to Vista x64 in the first place...

I'll look for it, but ther eis a recent thread wher a guy saw SIGNIFICANT improvement in photoshop with 8gb over 4gb.
Please link if you know the thread I'm talking about.
I don't know that it actually works like that in practice. I have 4GB and I have never seen more than 2GB in use.Quote:

Yes , but some peeps having problems when memory remapping is enabled under Vista environment.... at least i saw some reports. I on the otherhand didnt noticed any....
if you enable memory remapping then the OS won't see your 4gb.

sure takes vista longer to cache the extra two G,two hours operation time after boot up and 500 mb free,but it's bloating it up no doubt
