Danger Den IONE 8800GT 8800GTS (G92) Pressure Drop Test Results

Danger Den sent me some additional blocks to test, one of which is the IONE for the 8800GT. I don't have a GT yet myself to test thermally, so all I can do is the pressure drop testing for now. One misconception I had myself was that all full coverage waterblocks would be roughly the same on restriction, well as you can see that's not correct, this block is very low in restriction.

I was a bit suprised to see it was actually less restrictive than my MCW-60 but it is. Anyhow, this should be a good thing for users who have multiple blocks in the same loop as this block has very minimal restriction.

Yeah im getting kinda shocked that the block has less restrictions then a MCW60. I guess the MCW60 is no longer the flow king. :T


The true part now is how does it perform? :T

How about loading a TEC on it? :D

I'm more of a GPU only block type of guy, but that would probably change if I could afford Tri-SLI, then I'd probably go for a full coverage block...or THREE..:)

and if anyone can spot another EK-8800 pressure drop test, I'd like to compare it to the one I have which was from another tester.

only problem is the 8800GT cant do tri sli. :T

Sorry martin this is one area i dont have spare parts laying around at. Expecially 8800GT class :X

If you can clamp it down, you can adust voltage to the hotside, and get a C/W ratio no?

Yeah, I don't have the card, so I can't test that. I am however gathering some more tools to do thermal testing. I have a Crystalfontz on the way, and going to make a mess of thermal sensors (Up to 32 channels) to log temps for me. Then I can just let it rip and average hundreds of results with better confidence.:up:

Great work Martin as usual, Pretty soon block makers will be sending you cards also so you could do better compartisons, Your getting a following :up: :up:

I think the difference with the DD and the EK is that the DD's use larger channels and less restrictive pass thru's fop their waterblocks.

If you look at the ones that have been posted today for the 3870x2's the EK and the DD, the DD seems to have a larger channel and also the water pass over the chips seems larger, and less restrictive on the DD then the EK's

I don't know if that will be a factor but that is a visual comparison between the two of them that i made. my 2c

I'll test anything anyone is willing to send me. I've asked around to all sorts of manufacturers for some samples to test. I'm just glad to add more options to the flow rate estimator..:up:

But next up is Xilicon's SF800 flow meter test...special thanks to him for letting me borrow one of his spare meters....:up:

That's a nice surprise and if it perform as well as a EK block, we may have a worthy choice. I was one of the haters but I admit I may be wrong about this one.

Thanks Martin! My IONE should be arriving today, then I'll start my build. I'll give ya temps in comparison to my HR03 GT cooler. And my WC setup specs. With your past testings, you should be able to come up with some numbers.

I went DD because the have made some of the best past WC parts. Have they really put out absolute crap? Ever? They have been around for a long time and deserve testing results before the naysayers speak up.

I should be up and running on the 4th of Feb.

You apparently haven't seen mcoffey's poorly machined 8800GTX block pics (and let's not forget the poly top incident) or you wouldn't be asking this questions.

I'm not a DD hater by any stretch, as I've been quite vocal about seeing numbers on this block before dismissing it, as it looks quite promising.

Martin, hurry up and get a card you can put that thing on. :p: Looking good so far. :up:

I've been working on the estimator to at least produce multiple unit results. I have some of that already working in the new version I havn't yet released.

Is mH20 more of the metric pressure standard?

Whish I had an 8800gt I could make use of this block, it's very nice. If I wasn't spending all my money on testing gear, I probably could have afforded another 8800GTX by now.

Yes I believe so. When discussing PD with Cathar and others it is always in mH20, not PSI or inH20. Since pumps are rated in meters, mH20 makes sense (to me at least) as I have no idea WTF a PSI is equal to in terms of head rating. :shrug: Well I looked it up, 1 PSI = .70309 mH20. http://www.setra.com/tra/app/app_pcc.htm

I just think it is MUCH easier to grasp when the units (in this case meters are the same).

I also want to add that I have been very critical of DD on their recent CPU blocks, but these new full covers look GREAT! I think I would almost get these over the EK's... sorry Eddy, but these are very free flowing.

Was about a bad block, got a new one ASAP overnight, it's like we all imagine, sexy and flat.

w00t nice guide martin, im very please with my maze 5 on my 8800gt, it is the coolest part on my pc lol :)

I'm really happy with the machining on my copy. There was a couple of small burs left behind the bolt stands, but all of the mating mosfet surfaces appeared to be lapped, and the GPU contact was finished with a large bit.

I'm sure they'll take care of that one for you..
