8800GTS Stock GPUvcore is 1.27v @704mhz on air

I want to up my Vcore on GPU only ! My memory gets 2300mhz with no Voltmod! My GPU is stock Vcore @ 704 @1.27v , Shader is 1782 and my Memory is @ 2308mhz@2.08v STOCK. I dont want to mess with the ram ,The ram is running too good as is! Being on Air this is amazing i think with a A3 320mb GTS that is over 1year old. So I only want to do a Vcore mod...

1st Can the GPU Vcore be changed thru the Bios and is the pencil mod really not possiable?

2nd What can a 8800GTS320 do on Vcore? Mine is @ 1.27v and ive read that the 640mb's can go up to 1.4v..on the GPU! Id be happy with 1.3v or 1.35v

3rd where would i go to get the correct VR to solder the mod with ,,IE :Radioshack?

A screenie of my clocks on AIR with moddified stock heatsink.:up: GPU-Z reads my shader wrong ive already tested this By running my shader @ 1674 and losing 250+ points in 3Dmark06...If i try to raise it to 1836mhz which is the next step higher i dont have enuff Volts! you added polish to the IHS and the HS?

that basically goes against what most say about lapping as the polish itself only adds to the thermal resistance........?!?!

The purpose of lapping is to flatten. The purpose of polishing is to smooth the lap surfaces pores that 2000grit cannot smooth. A polished surface will will transfer the same amount heat but with less thermal paste than a unpolished lapped 2000grit surface. The micro pores take less to fill. Also Before i did LAP/polish the heatsink i could not reach 704/1782/2308 @52c fully loaded on AIR with the same modified fan @ 1.27volts! Origanal stock temps were 69c idle 82c load.

It it wasnt benifical to do it ,then i wouldnt have one of the fasterst air coloed 1st gen 8800's would I

So besides ripping on my card and my nice Oc . Will you please Answer my Qeustions on Vmods so i can Run my card @ 756+mhz 1836mhz 2308mhz instead of having to abort/crash in test 2 of 3dmark06 because of low Volts!!!!!

you would ave been better off just going naked core.

the reason behind TIM is do what you did with the polish, except that the TIM will transfer heat MUCH better then the polish would.

There are countless threads here stating just that.

Yes lapping helps a great deal, but polishing is a completely different matter.

the thing is that the surface is high polished after lapping with 2000grit then i cleaned off any residue with denatured alchohal and then a ketchup rub. It gave me the smoothest surface over just lapping. I am not complainig about my temps. im @42c idle and 54c load with the Oc set in 3dmode . Rivatuner 206 can not use 2D mode under X64bit as of yet with 169.09 nvidia driver,so my temps arnt a problem with this running 7hours aday:yepp:

Also i can easily tear my card apart and lap with 2000grit AGAIN. The sad part is that my temps will go up a lil more.. When i ran it with out polishing the surface after lapping with 2000grit my temps were 48c idle 61c load..Im also using Mx-2 on memory and GPU with the spring washer mod to close the gap between memory and it put more preshure on GPU. 100% stable

Ive also read about people polishing and getting bad results! They probally didnt lap thier stuff before they polished either!

But thanks for the polishing info . I need Vmod info on what VR to buy to do the Mod...

understandable, as with many that boast about polishing because it looks pretty, they usually don't see that the polish if anything would only be a hurt then a help.

Very much aggreable there...I just thought id give it a go...I may pull it apart when i find the right VR to solder and then at the same time i may relap the IHS shader pad and heatsink again just for kicks.. i may of had put to little paste the first time which gave me higher readings than this time. It is cooling way good though for an A3core that isnt a GT. I could also Vmod and then see if my Oc becomes stable @756/1775/2308 .It it does good temp wise like how it is now ill leave it! If noT ill tear it apart:rofl: like they say third times a charm.

whats suxs is Rivatuner is Broke for XP64bit with 169.09 driver it only will work in 3d mode full time, you cant run 2d or 3dlowlevel. I hope that gets fixed real soon

gotvoltage - awesome clocks! that is one hell of a 8800GTS mate. My vgpu is also 1.27v but i top out at 675 (A2 rev), and my mem is @ 1.87v and can do 2052 MHz. Yours is at 2.08v which is even higher than a GTX (1.95v). No wonder it can do 2300.

but no, it appears you cannot do the vgpu mod with a pencil. You need a VR between 1KOhm and 20KOhm in resistance.

Great lap job & fan mod too, i also posted in that thread, im considering doing the lap & thermal paste mod to my GTS. Did lapping actually help your clocks or just help with the heat? (i wasnt sure what you meant there)

mate you dont get it - polishing makes the surface perfectly flat. Then the polish compound is cleaned off. It does make a better contact & thermal transfer if done properly, no question about that.

hmm..this will help me out as well...seems my GTS has some hidden talent also..720mhz Core on stock volts with stock heatsink (ambient here is 8*C though :)) memory right now is at 2200mhz and Shader clocks are sitting at 1700mhz...hmmm..maybe its time for me to lap my cooler..

I had an A3 rev 8800GTS that did 702MHz gaming stable on stock volts.
Soldered the vGPU mod and reached only 729MHz @ 1.33V for gaming/benching stability, anything over 1.4V caused a freeze (= GPU powerdown -> 0.1V).

Don't expect wonders from the vGPU mod...

Thank's i will keep that in mind...Plus ive run 756MHz but not stable on stock Vcore. Im just trying to Sqeeze every thing out of this 320 on Air and if it does a lil better i may run water loop for it.

My temps are very stable and before Lapping i could not Reach 1782Mhz on the shader, I was stuck @ only 1654mhz with memory sitting @2100mhz max...So the lil bit of extra work helped in my case . Also once i do the volt mod ill know what to expect 3Dbench wise. Im picking up a new pump in few weeks ,Seeing my brother now owns my 655, Im using a spare little 100gph for mh CPU! So i canT exceed 3.51ghz on my X2 untill i replace the pump:down: !. With a 300gph i can easily run 3.61-3.65ghz @1.63vcore this should get me into 13000+ area with single card on air and a X2:yepp:

P.S. Timbosam/Largon thank you very much... that was info i needed.. most mods ive read were for 640mb Voltages...I really didnt know if they were the same or not...well soon see:yepp:

Impressive clocks & temps, mine can only be stable at 684, i can run 702 but i get a hardlock after a while..

Side question, My GTS 320MB carries a Hynix ram... the markings are barely visible..

Well i have a Little update to compare to my SM2.0 and SM3.0 from my maxed unVoltmodded first ScreenShot, and theres more to come :up: Vmoded my GPU and did the pencil on mem tonight:up:

Stock GPU ..........1.27v
Stock Mem..........2.00v

Vmod GPU.....Up to 1.44v before shut down kicks in! Ran Core to 784mhz but didnt run past First 3Dmark06 test due to Volt protection Kicken in @784/1836/2304:shocked: So for that i will need to mod the Stock heat sink a lil more:rofl:

Vmod GPU@1.38v
Pencil Mem@2.10v

:up: So for now im happy @729mhz//1836mhz//2304mhz:up:

Note; when using Shader unlinked mode Gpu -Z will only show the shader @MHZ linked to GPU .I verified this with another 8800GTS on this machine and i am @1836mhz on the shader:yepp:

nice one good to hear it went well :up: I also have the same protection kick in at 1.45v (idles fine blackscreen in bench vgpu reads 0.01v). What load temperature are you getting with 1.38v & that fan + lapped HS?

Im @ 57c when 3Dmark06 is up and going......Gaming im @55-56cmax so far when @ 21c ambiant..... if i remember correct @23c it never goes over 59c.Protection mode would kick in before my temps would go above that..Only because i was running 1.45v to find my Max HeatRange...

Personally i dint think my "Fanmod was gonna work this good. My CPU in sig will heat up faster than my card due to only using a 100gph pumpafter 10 runs back to back.. I can still tweak the heatsink for more . As for now im thinking of modifying to run on bare I H S...I need to figure how much to remove from heatsink and double check the clearance before i decide on that one!:shocked: The new 8800/s are bare under the hood so it has me thinking... All one has to do is remove IHS and then trimm/cut the SpringScrew post down and walla heatsink on bare Gpu...As you can see im having fun with this card...

Im a little extreme some times and water would have been too easy for me, Challenge is everything.:D

Note: Temps will vary system to system .. I have GOOD Airflow and constant Ambiant of 21-22c Room Temp

Wow ive gotta mod or replace my stock cooler. Im hitting 82*C in 3DMark06 and 85/86*C in crysis at ~26*C ambient. Its stable but its too hot, and if it was cooler i could get the core and shader higher.

HR keeps the heat in you case even though it cools the GPU More

Note: the HR03-PlusDosnt exaust the HOT AIR out of the Case .....With the way i modded my card it feels like a blowdryer throwing all the heat out back of case ..Thats also why i cut the rear DVI/plate vents out of the 8800 for more Airflow and it worked very effectively..

My ambiant in Riva never goes over 36c @ 22c room temp full load and my GPU has not exceeded 60c ever since i modded the heatsink...Whats funny is i didnt think i would get this good results with Air, i was already thinking of a waterblock...

My next step is measuring clearance to go IHSless :shocked: The GPU is made tha same as GT and the GT is BARE thats why they run cooler for a A3. Which my GPU=A3,im just figuring how much to shave of mem and Vreg pads and the Springscrew pads ... If the clearance seems good, next week i may go for it to see if i can up the GPU to 756-783 on Air...It will be real tricky but i like a good challenge...

On my overclock ,if i go any higher its definatly "temp" related even though i havnt passed 60c yet no artifacs it will kick in the PWM protection above 729mhz //1836mhz// 2304mhz..So i know if i run GPU and shader cooler i may get my goal for SM2.0 of 6000 and SM3.0 6000 with CPU of 2700points...Im almost there.

Then ill see if i can bump my CPU back up to 3.6ghz with a bigger pump....that should put me into 13000+range..If not then after Xmas i will have a 9500 or 9600Phenom:D

To top things off i just sold my 8600 which ran very good on Stockcooling ..The screenshot below was my EVGA8600gts N761 clocked to SC specs..Which also had a A3 revision chip! Thats what made me push my 8800gts like crazy:ROTF:

Timbosan If you mod stock cooler make shure you use the Nylon washer trick, it will add preshure to center of GPU , makes all the differance. Its like the intel with using bow method but better...If you do a dry run with screws tight and paste only on the GPU when you remove the heatsink you will have a nice uniform contact in center of GPU/IHS the size of a Quarter or lilttle more....You only need to compress the springs fully closed with nylon washer " do not CRANK DOWN the spring screws" the screws will stop turning with little force with the springs fully compressed and your set!

Demo Your ram will probally do 2200mhz -2250mhz depends on cooling and shader and Volts....My ram would run 2300mhz stock ..memVolts @2.08vSTOCK , I was lucky on that because when i looked up the Memory Volts for a GTX i was shocked that they are 1.98vStock...It probally has to do with my factory BFGtech Bios ........60.80.18.00.07.......I know the bios also has to do with the memory running higher than 2200mhz too , it all depends on the Bios timing which was set from the manufacture

Having the case open eliminates the problem of hot air not being exhausted, but i think i wont get any better temps than this probabbly just 2-3c lower when IHS is lapped... i wonder if it would be safe for me to try the BFG bios..

Anyone got some ideas on how much MAX safe voltage would these Hynix vrams take ?

All my sreen shots higher than 12000+ are with 2308mhz and the GPU@704

Then i did the Vmods and raised the Gpu to 729mhz and shader to 1836mhz for 12300+...The shader and memory make the differance in all my gains NOT THe GPU!

Before i performed my HEATSINK MOD,,my card wouldnt even do 11000 @704 // 1648// 1004mhz....My CPU has remained @3.58ghz for all benches resulting in 2700 points average for CPU...

Every time ive changed a setting ive GAINED...MHZ...FPS and BAndwidth and im not done yet...

:yepp: The reason you may not see a change is because your overheating the memory...The first sign of heat=No MHZ improvment......when you add Volts and nothing happens but just unstability and or you clocks wont go any higher..That is your heat limit :yepp: This is why i did my heatsink MOD and it really does perform!:yepp:

To sum it up! Volt mods GPU@1.40v Memory@2.10v (Stock was 1.27v and 2.08v)

300mhz gain on my memory

29mhz gain on my GPU

188mhz gain on my Shader

3Dmark06 went from 10952 up to 12327 ,substantial gain i believe..:yepp:

so its all stable now at 701/1836/2304 @ 1.4v & 2.1v? i saw you were having trouble getting it all stable together, i gather you sorted that out now? did you end up leaving your ram voltage at 1.96?

You wont believe what happen last night......

PG&E is getting a fat bill for 1 harman Kardon Home Theater reciervor ... 1 Bfgtech 320 and maybe the mobo/mem.....2lamps.....1microwave.... Three saltwater tanks had pump failure....! What really sucks is when my power went out at Midnight and i was typing here on how good my new Sythe fan was doing ....Then wham 5times and couldnt pull the plug quik enuff then my Back up even blew its lid ..:explode2: smoke was every where and fricken two light bulbs popped :brick: :explode2: and i was like Ah Fuuuuuu** no way...I just got :owned: by a Masive PoWeR:spam: from P:gay: G&E I live in california and a new sub station was put in my neck of the woods ,,along with major power failure now ,,,this is so f........wrong..ive never lost athing due to power in my life,untill now......Even two GIF's blew in kithchen and one was the Mwave..

duuuuuuuuuuuuuude, i feel so sorry for you! Not the BFG! I cant believe how clean your post was if that was me damnit id go ballistic! was it a storm or just the substation going up? you had no spike arrestor on your pc power boards? I run a Fortron Continuous Power Filter & Spike arrestor, cost big bucks but gives me some peace of mind, possibly a wise investment for you.
