Like many i use both. I use OCCT for screening, relqtively quickly validate the stability of a new oc. if all is well & i'm looking for 24/7 stability, then i'll run prime95/orthos overnight or longer.
I run OCCT and that is pretty much it. In my experience if the system is OCCT stable it is stable. I have not experienced any stability problems after passing 30 minutes OCCT.
To say this simply, OCCT was written to find errors more quickly than other priming programs. I'd say just use both so you'll feel more confident ;)
I use both First OCCT for quik looksee and if it passes that its a pretty good indication it will pas Prime95
occt doesn't seem to heat up my cpu as much as the small ffts in orthos
I don't know much about OCCT but the way it cycles the load on my CPU seems nearly identical in it's pattern to PRIME... does anyone know what the underlying code in OCCT is doing?
I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same thing.
OCCT is really all you need, i also like prime for that extra comfort. OCCT finds errors faster though, even though it runs a bit lighter
It really is a pain in the as* if an error pops out after 6 hours of orthos.

1h OCCT stable means prime95 failure after 10min most of the time for me (small FFT's). I only use OCCT to test for 3dmark06 or WCG. For the rest it pretty much sucks..
A few hours of OCCT is a pretty good indicator that the system will run just about anything a person is likely to use. For quadcore GTL adjustments multi-threaded Prime (Blend) is a necessity.
Prime is always better test ... if you have stable rig in Prime, you have rock solid pc system ... OCCT is not too good ...and trustful ...

like Brother Esau, i use both , for me they both have their place, Occt for quickly evaluating stability of new oc, prime to then get that 24/7 seal of approval.
As always, it is pretty much up to you what software you use to test your system. It depends on personal preferences.
BUT, if your CPU cannot run ANYTHING you throw at it without producing errors, it is not stable. As easy as that. A system is only stable if it can execute all (compatible) operations fully error free.
If i use Prime95, witch test most i use to test my cpu stable ?
if i start prime it start automatic a test, but if is screenshots of other users i see another sort of test with Prime95.
Witch test are the best for Prime95 if i use Prime ?
You should use Prime95 version 25.4 as it automatically test all four cores on your Q6600 :)
When it starts select "small FFT's" test and let it run. Don't forget to tell prime95 to check for rounding errors (in Advanced menu and then check "Round off Checking") otherwise you won't know if one of the cores failed and you need to give it more vcore or lower the FSB/multi.

On the choice between OCCT and prime95 I would say prime95 because it stresses the CPU a lot more than OCCT and as OBR said if its stable in prime then its stable. Period !!.Sure it takes hours and hours of testing in prime95 to test for stability, but it wouldn't be worth it if it didn't.
For a quick stability test there is no need to use OCCT since prime95 will fail just as quickly as OCCT will.
virtualrain is right. if you think about it the cpu can handle small ffts without accessing memory. Larger ffts need access to memory as the whole computation can't be held in the cpu registers.
That's why when you run a blend test you can see your cpu's thermal profile changes between running small ffts = highest cpu temps & large ffts = 3~4C cooler or mine anyweay. Memory temps follow the inverse pattern :D

But i have now tested my Q6600 G0 but i cant go higher than 3,5Ghz
If i set it to 3,5Ghz windows doesnt boot
If i set the vcore higher than it boot not
I got the Q6600 G0 L728A826 1,2875 Vid
If i set the Vcore in the Bios on 1,5volt it doesnt help i cant boot with that vcore to.
Does it help if i set the fsb termination or the mch chipset voltage or the ich chipset voltage higher to get higher clock ?
I hear that many Q6600's can run 3,6Ghz with no problem.
Why i cant get over 3,5Ghz ?
I run it with a Asus P5W DH Deluxe.
ive had prime pass for 3 hours, and occt fail in 2 mins....i would most likely do both to be sure.
I have the same question. OCCT will fail within minutes but Prime can run for hours without failing. My temp will never go above 60 and I don't have FSB limitation. I've tested using lower multiplier and higher FSB. I wonder which program I should trust.
