For all P5K and Quad Core owner - Caution high FSB and high vcore !!

Yesterday We tested Asus P5K Vanilla with Quad Core CPU - Q6600 step B3 on cascade. Results is no good :mad:

After two hours benchingh, running WPrime 1024M, four cores loaded at 100% @ 495MHz FSB @ 1.75V We see big buuum from testing setup and at this moment black screen on monitor. So what We see ? Check this pictures :

We see burned PWM section on P5K Vanilla :eek: Only 2h at this clocks and high vcore and 4 phase power has burned.
Vcore at testing We set from 1.7 to 1.8V.

Well ; do not much stress testing Your Vanilla with Quad Core at high FSB and high vcore becouse ...

I did some LN2 3D stuff on one of these over the weekend. They are not good boards for 3D either with a dual, the vreg is too weak. You saw NewBeetles blown cap P5K-E thread? Same problem.

What did you expect on three phase PWM?
Your chip has been pulling 300W+ with that frequency and voltage.

Ye I saw this thread. With dual core cpu I don't have any problems. Benching with this mobo up to 1.96 Vcore and no problems, no "sound" from PWM section. But with quad core cpu only two hours bench.

You really need the Deluxe for the big OC's, the vanilla just can't handle the power consumption.

man that sucks,it looks like one of the other caps looks portly also.
or is it just the pic?,almost a two fer if so.

That looks nasty. Perhaps a cap mod would help these boards? There are two missing places for caps, one right next to the power connector & another next to the cpu socket. Perhaps adding, &/or replacing the caps with higher rated ones before benching quads would help?

The P5k Delux cannot either. I also blew a cap of my P5K Dlx...

Sorry then my mistake. It would seem wise to replace that cap when you get the board to avoid further explosions. You can get 4700uF 16v caps that would do the job.

:eek: Wow! Talk about pushing a board to its limits! :D
