C2D: are they really degrading with >1.55-1.6V?

I know there have been threads on this issue. I realize Intel's spec say running at 1.55v(max vcore) can and supposedly will lead to degradation of the cpu so that it may not work at stock speeds and stock vcore

with that party line notwithstanding:

who has seen there stable C2D fail after running 1.55V+ on the cpu

I do not define stable by Superpi ...I mean tested stable by Prime95/Orthos blend for no less than 8hrs(longer the better)

I prefer no small ffts since many cpus need more vcore to run largefft/blend to be stable...

I prefer blend since this will really stress a cpu/mobo/ram

several of guru OCers here do not seem to feel 1.55v max on air/1.6v on water is that risky....YES, I know the cpu with those volts will have shorter life span than Intel expects(is that 3yrs since that=retail warranty)

With such sporadic reports, my sense is that many of the cpus that are "degrading" were not really tested stable to begin with

anything over max rated vcore is risky...now...if you have the money to replace it then don't worry about it.

i paid $890 for Q6600...i hate to burn it up just trying to hold 400 FSb with 1.55+ vcore when i can do 380 FSB with 1.48 vcore...tiny drop in performance is 'ok' with me...there is always someone out there to beat your overclock!

ive been running 1.6Vcore off/on for just about a year now, no problems here.

my 6400 i ran with 1.64 vcore but that was only a few months, now it will do 3190mhz with 1.38vcore (same as it originally did) 30+ hrs orthos stable

I am not suggesting the the 20mhz is worth killing a cpu...certainly not for me

My point of this thread, is there have been multiple reports of failing cpus(not a complete death but a degradation with "high vcore" but it has not been clear to me from the reports as to what people used to confirm stablility to start with

My sense is 1.65v is a NO-NO and people have seen issues with use for as little as a week


1.55v..seems pretty safe from most accounts and usage..although I have no idea if this is the bios setting or DMM measurement

1.6v...just not sure

really depends .. kinda like how much ur chip will oc on 1.45v ... all about luck ... depends on temp as well .. keeping temp low does help

The thing is many enthusiasts "upgrade" frequently. My E6600 is fine and I also have C1E and EIST active.

If I was planning on keeping the same gear for three years or greater I'd probably be more conservative. As is I am on a six month to one year cycle for most things I buy. Video card, CPU, and even motherboard plus ram would be good examples. I try to avoid ram and mobo and when you change platforms like from 939 to 775 it's not possible.

I have been running my CPU at 1.53 3.4 stable since I bought it last year in August and did not find any problems regarding to you question but if i run Orthos again let's say 3 months time and find the issue that you think , I will let you know for sure.

I realize many here will upgrade long before the cpu dies...but look around many have older machines running chips OCed for yrs

Uptil last yr...I usually waited 2 yrs before upgrading cpus..now about 1 yr cycle and I move the cpus to my son's or wife computer and lower vcores to near stock and OC what I get...they could careless about a tweaked out setup

But now that quad core may go for less tha n$300..I may update even sooner

I am just not convinced that these cpus are dying at 1.55v....I would expect with good cooling they will last 3yrs

i'd say its just bad luck.

if these C2D chips are degrading, and if there is a huge number of them, there'll be people moaning about it on all forums.

its just like buying a car, 200k units sold, maybe 10% will have a engine blown up in the first 5k miles, but the rest last much longer, and a even smaller % dies because people slap a T88 turbo and run it on 100PSI boost.

just pray it never happens to yours.

i would say you are trying to convince yourself that giving your cpu 1.55 or 1.6v is fine...even if you are on water or ice box type cooler, you are still applying that voltage to the cpu circuits...heat might not kill it but that voltage certainly can!

eh, if you are always thinking upgrade and want an excuse for your wife...LOL...then pour the volts on!:D

yeah; i usually pour in the volts when i'm thinking about getting a new chip. (half hoping the cpu dies and i am "forced" to get a new one :hehe: ;))

i still reckon heat will kill a chip b4 highvoltage+good cooling will....sounds obviarse.

the only time i fried a cpu was when i 'accidentally' forgot to put the cpu sink back on a 1 gig athlon:yawn:
and i was glad to see it go actually....teehee took about 5 seconds to smell that fatal smell.

my old 3500 didnt seem to clock as high near the end...maybe it was excessive volts for too long :confused:

The reason for the thread:
1. to see if anyone with a stable cpu has had it truly degrade

2. to convince myself to go for more volts(@1.50v)

Hell, at this point with the Intel price cuts...replacing the cpu is not the issue...problem is now the e6600 just do not look like good OCers like early batches

Kinda hoping will see the X3060(assuming their prices are competitive) replace them
