PA120.3 To shroud or not to shroud ?

I’m going Have a PA120.3 with Yate Loon D12SL-12 120mm fans in the base of a TJ07B-W, and I was Just wondered if any one has tested a PA120.3 (with and without) the shroud fitted using low CFM fans to see if the shroud made any difference to the temps.

Thermochill says this in their FAQ:

For best temps on the PA series, testing currently shows PUSH to be the best solution... shrouded vs unshrouded exhibits minimal benefits, in the region of upto 2%. Fans pushing as opposed to fans pulling exhibits increases of upto 4%, and is roughly equivalent to running a shroud with fans in a pull configuration.

When I've been looking at threads about Thermochill PA rads, most people seem to use a shroud.

the pa series has a built in shroud. I don't use a shroud at all. I just use the gasket that came with it.

But it does state a 2% benefit. So i guess its beetter to use one :toast:

Totally your choice, but with a shroud, the whole fan+shroud+rad combo becomes pretty thick...

Yeah i am a little worried about that as i am putting a PA120.3 in the top of a Lian Li PC71 soon (awaiting parts & £££). If its too much i think i will resell the shroud and go without :)

Yes, with the shroud the radiator quickly becomes larger than life.

IIRC Radical_53's test show a slight increase in a pull configuration. :shrug:

also there a bit thin on the ground in the UK so you might have to go without anyway

I got my rad direct from the Thermochill, you can also get the shroud from them to.

According to Marci, the shrouds result in such a minimal increase in performance that it's not even worth running one. The only reason Thermochill sells them is because people kept asking about them. I think it went something like, "I want you guys to make a shroud!" "You don't need one, it doesn't increase performance at all." "But I want one!" "OK here ya go, 20 bucks!" My quoting may be a wee bit off. :)

i guess if i have my rad mounted with out shroud it would free up space for another 3 fans blowing onto the rad. Do you think ??
Note: the rad will be mounted into the top of the case so it would be

I think maybe people like to use the shroud because there is less chance of puncturing the rad if the screws are too long. They warn this in there FAQ section.

I've just ordered a load of 120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12 Blue Led Case Fan: 29.95 USD from Petra. Which are highly recommended low CFM fans. So if your in no rush I'll let you what they test like in push or push rad push.

I spoke to a tech guy at Thermochill and he said " that rad I ideally suited to low CFM without a shroud in push config

Great. I will probably go down the same route then. But please post results.
Will be a few weeks before i got the project in full flow (no pun intended :slapass: ).

If you want those fans you got to get them in the USA cos no one stocks them over here.

I read loads of reviews about low CFM fans for rads and these always came out on top, most other makes are crap!

The only down side of ordering in the US is it cost for shipping.

My fan order came to 48 dollars and the express shipping was 37dollars. But because goods are always cheaper in the US it didn't workout too bad, about £43 in total

yeah the pa when useing standard fans like the yate loons goes just fine with out a shroud however if u use 38mm fans on it (like i do, so u know im not rippen this outa my butt (><) ) then the shroud is a must. anything above 5v on 38mm fans makes the dead spot huge and the sucking noice is crazy!

Did look harder cos I did a google search a few days ago for the yates and it headed me straight to that UK site.

They've been out of stock on the blue LED's for days now. So I placed the order with Petra last night. I got them for 6 dollars each so they were half the price. Thats for Parts List:

2x 92mm Evecool Aluminum Case Fan w/ Quad Blue LEDs : 17.98 USD

5x 120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12 Blue Led Case Fan: 29.95 USD

Subtotal: 47.93 USD

So it hasn't cost me any more to get them from Petra, they are coming air express 3 day tracker, so at least, I know when I'm getting them.
