not unexpected because any Proc that has Hypertransport can use any and ALL AMD K8 chipsets. Heck one could even make a PowerPC Processor with IMC and Hypertransport and it could plug right in

it really is an impressive design, just need the right memory controller for your application and bam, done.

Yeah that's not going to happen (with Intel and HT). They have CSI. And what would Dell really have to offer? They have several companies that are developing HT. I could see them implementing, but i doubt they'd be a major push when it comes to R&D

as they will continue to use amd chips, it would make sense for them to get the rebate offered by amd to become an adopter.

When AMD has the lead by far Dell pushes Intel. When Intel has the lead by far Dell pushes AMD? WTF? They should have just stuck with Intel, at least the would have it good now.

i'm gonna have to say, thank god dell sells and pushes AMD now, and i can't believe you'd say what you said.... you're basically saying, 'I love paying more than I should for a computer!' with a s41T-eatin grin on your face...kinda scary

wrong. dell's prices are always competitive because its other venders were using AMD before its own adoption.

and dell's adoption is too little and too late. now intel has the upper hand, dell's sales are not going to look too bright. intel will have the upper hand for quite a while too, at least for desktop and notebooks. amd won't release new desktop/notebooks till much later than barcelona and agena fx.

Enthusists, which are an extremely small percentage of Dell's customers, are the only ones who really care what specific components are inside the PC. The margins are so tight on finished systems that Dell has no choice but to use the cheapest possible parts and the bulk of their customers either don't care or don't know any better.

their customers do care as dell has more enterprise customers than the other venders. and people tend to look at TOC when they make corporate buying decisions, and their buying decisions requires qualifications that takes time.

lower the number of suppliers on mobo will have shorter qual times. providing its own mobo design will have faster time to market. that's y amd needs its own integrated graphics chipsets to penetrate enterprise businessses.

So what? When Dell was Intel exclusive, and Intel was behind for 3 years, look where that left them? They adopted AMD in case something like P4 vs. K8 happens again, so they won't be stuck with the lower performing chips

Do you guys think that now that Dell is shipping AMD boxen that it is ONLY shipping AMD? My school (Georgia Tech) has been purchasing the e6400 based desktops by the truckload to outfit our new Klaus Computing building. Nothing like an E6400 and 2 gigs of ram to crunch through some Matlab.. open your eyes nubcakes.

noone's thinking that, the point is that now that dell sells amd, there's more competition

Or maybe Intel doesn't actually have the upper hand (and certainly not by far).

As far as sales go AMD is selling everything they make, so they are doing allright. Don't try and compare absolute numbers, because Intel is simply so much bigger, this however doesn't mean they have the upper hand (and be glad they don't, competition is good for us customers).

As said the HyperTransport design is nothing short of brilliant (and don't forget stolen, but who cares). The old (and I do mean old, in technology terms ancient) FSB technique simply sucks, driving up prices for chipsets and motherboards and making them drink lots of power and generate heat while they are at it.

So only because Intel put out Conroe which has an impressive ALU it is very dumb to say Intel has the upper hand. That's simply not the way the world works. AMD had a technological superior CPU out there for years against the P4, still it was Intel who had the most support. If you would ask any regular Joe who had the best CPU they would say: Intel. Now finally the world has seen AMD makes some damn good stuff.

If you see what AMD can do with the budget they were on, one would be foolish not to support them. A company like Dell has checked them out, seen how they proved themselves and are now taking full advantage of that. With AMD Dell can make a cheap power efficient system which still has enough performance to do just about anything.

Conroe has made people blind and somehow forget the last 15 years...
