Not sure if this topic has been beatten to death, but here it goes anyway:
Hmm, this is going to be a repost, sort of, of a thread I started in the air cooling forum. Anyway, I am building an X6800 system, and I picked up a Monsoon II to try it out. Thought, sure, maybe it won't work so great, but I have never used em before...Just curious, but whats your take on the TEC cooling solutions vesus, say, the Tuniq setup which everyone seems to be in love with? Thanks in advance! :toast:

Even if heavy OC is not what this machine is all about? I mean, after I get comfortable I am going to play with it, see what it can do, but I doubt it would be heavily OC'd for any length of time. Just wondering if this is a consideration or not... :confused:Quote:

I don't feel any air cooler with a tec is better but that is my openion. does the titian get temps to stay better then a factory cooler yes. but you cant get a nice $60 solid copper heatsink that will do just as good

Dude I just got my Tuniq today and my load temp under Orthos beta dropped 10c and that with the Artic Silver 5 just applied and not even srt up yet, also I did not even lap the base yet either!
Using the stock Tuniq fan 2800mhz 1.4vcore idle 22c load 41c
Zalman CPNS9500 2800mhz 1.4vcore idle 31c load 52c:woot:
Temps taken with core temp
Thats a nice drop in temp.

The Amanda is effectively the same cooler as the Monsoon II. Both are merely re-branded MACS coolers, different models in the same series with Vigor's and Titan's own small changes and shiny logos.
The Amanda is a MACS MA-7130 and the Monsoon II is a MACS 7131. Both use a 12v, 50W (though I suspect it's actually an 88W) TEC plate.
Check MACS Technology's Website and see for yourself.
I too was considering one of these because I've had an illicit love affair with peltier coolers for years and was really excited at the idea of one that actually worked without all the drawbacks. Then I came to my senses... 50W? Is that going to effectively move it's own thermal output much less the output of an overclocked C2D? I decided I didn't want to feed a considerable chunk of power supply (and, ergo, the electric bill) to the thing in order to feed the peltier's lust for amperage.
These things are really neat to look at on paper. But I really think they are better left there unless you really want to start experimenting with more complex systems. ;)

the graphs in the last link shows the tuniq beating the monsoon, although the reviewer extended the overclock using the monsoon further for some reason
imo the monsoon is badly designed - i thought of sandwiching a TEC that couldn't handle the CPU's entire load between two layers of heatpipes a few months ago, interesting to see that its been done. the monsoon's TEC needs to be bigger, and the parts cooling the CPU and the TEC need to be seperated, and possibly specialised, then i'm sure it'd be much better than any aircooler. the monsoon is a failure compared to what could have been done... imo
If you use a TEC I don't think its fair to compete with a non-TEC cooler, because 1. you are using a s***load more electricity 2. you are using a heat pump. Just overclock that CPU and the temps will start to go 30, 31, 32, 33, 34..... 78, 79, 80, 81......

There is an Ultra TEC cpu cooler version(same place that makes the heatsinks) or the Titan Amanda TEC cpu cooler(dual fan version). These TEC coolers are a dual heatsink cpu cooler with a TEC, The 1st heatsink w/heatpipes, Then the TEC, Then the 2nd Heatsink w/heatpipes. So the TEC is sandwiched between TWO Heatsinks, If the TEC stopped working You'd still have heat transfered to the bottom heatsink at the very least and there is an alarm in case that happens.

Well I think It would do nicely as It does have two fans and right now My Vigor Monsoon II has a cpu temp of 38C right now(PC1), But then this is nightime, In the day It goes up some to about 45C or so, Depends on the rooms temp really. My swamp cooler for the house has yet to be installed of course, But the air will stay cool even on the hottest of days then and It gets pretty hot and dry here in the Western Mojave desert. Only PC2 does not have a Vigor, PC2 has an xp120 as It's an old motherboard and cpu.Quote:

Modern motherboards have thermal shutdown, so air-cooled TECs should not risk destroying anything. They also don't get cold enough to cause condensation problems. However, I'm still skeptical about their place in the overclocking society. Despite what others may say, they do have a maximum heat load. Some on this forum say that they have neared that load as thier temps near 65C, while others claim that reaching this load is near impossible.
