False Boots

I have a PB5 Deluxe with 804 BIOS and I am having trouble with false boots. When I power on the system it will seem to boot and then stops and then finally reboots after a couple seconds. I am using Crucial 10th Anv ram and have cleared the BIOS and tried many other things.
This seems to be getting worse and happens at almost any FSB speed or memory divider. I have run Mem386 and Super Pi with no problems. I even tried a different power supply and it still false boots.

Does this sound like a memory problem or motherboard?

That's OK with the Deluxe.

AFAIK - this happens because of mobo changing straps...

Yep, I have the same problem too, it is widespread, happens with a high FSB during cold boot BUT NOT during warm boot (restart). It is a problem with a sub-standard North Bridge (MCH) implementation.

The claim of "Adjust speed as you wish!" for the P5B series is fast becoming the biggest joke on the planet!!! Many of us buy Asus because it allows overclocking, and we expect it to do well. This is already part of the "consideration" we paid (think contract law: consideration = the premium price). Therefore, there is simply no excuse for such a "design inadequaccy" for a first tier motherboard manufacturer, if you ask me.

Didn't the motherboard remember which strap the MCH has to operate on based on the CMOS setting? Even if the CMOS has to be read (again?), couldn't the motherboard have inhibited (or hide) the first false boot until the necessary setup is done? Even if the change in strap has to be done, it only affect the motherboard, why did it have to power down the fan, the harddisk and etc to reduce the long term reliability of these attached devices? Didn't Asus' engineers even used their brains a little? And, if there is really no solution, why even put up the false claim of "Adjust speed as you wish!"?!!

I did some experimentation then wrote to Asus tech support, telling them my findings, hope that this will help them find a solution. A lady by the name Penny Yang pointed me to the FAQ! Duh! Therein, I could only find a problem relating to the South Bridge (ICH8R). I am now wondering if Asus not only produces sub-standard solutions these days but also hires noob and/or techincally incompetent people for tech support. This is sad.:mad:

yeh I get it on cold boots only- and last week I had the system resetting my oc settings after the double restart but the settings reset stopped after I did a higher OC lol

It didn't do this right away either. It has gotten worse over the last 3 months.

What is the best way to test memory? I am able to run Mem386 for 24 hours, and Super Pi runs fine too.

Is there any other recommendations to test the memory? I just want to be sure that I can write that off first, before I RMA this board. Its starting to do some strange things. Sometimes it does not boot at all, until I swap the 2 sticks of ram into the other slots, yellow to black, or vice versa.:(

Any ideas on what might be happening?

No, this is not normal. This board is a piece of junk if it does "false boot" even at stock. RMA the damn thing and let Asus solve the problem that they have created. Or, at least give the retailer some problem so that they know the P5B series sucks and not recommend it to their other customers.

this happens to me as well with pretty much all motherboards.. P5B Dlx, Abit AW9D MAX, striker extreme.......

it happens only when u Disable Virtualization Technology...... to me at least.

give it a go with VT enabled

What the heck exactly is Virtualization technology?

Virtualization technology is something intel has implemented on their CPUs.. From what i understand they allow processes to run in different rings..ring 0 etc..

if u dont know what rings are run a google search to find out. Its not that complicated to understand but if i try to explain it it will take quite a long post.. lol

Is that the same as Vanderpool Technology?

I use to have that problem until I flashed to 0714 bios and that did fix it. Now It only false boots when I change something in the bios.

VT is not the problem, I have mine enabled and it still false boot. Someone at Asus need to do a better job on the BIOS, if you ask me.
