Why are silicon wafers round?

I know that asking this is kind of like "why is the sky blue," but seriously, I have no idea. I tried searching around and couldn't really find an answer. Just thought to myself "square/rectangle processors from a round media...?"

This was something I had always thought about, as they make such a big deal about using every bit/chip... turning off areas that dont work in some to use as another sort of chip or grade and the like... interesting, like I always thought te way the fiber optics were made in a bit of a silly way... but if it works :)
