QX6700 + P5B, needs better cooling.

Got back into building systems after a few years and I have been having a lot of fun this last week with new QX6700 on my P5B Deluxe.
These are my current novice best benches but I cannot remain Orthos stable because at full load I run too hot= over 75-80c and shutdown.

I will upgrading PSU and building a cooling system but I am wondering if going for the water solution is worth it or just wait until I can afford phase change because it seems these Kentsfields run very hot on my P5B.

Running Orthos on Kentsfield is very tough. 3.4-3.5GHz is the typical limit with air cooling. Some people can run Orthos as high as 3.6GHz. One person did 3.8GHz, but I have trouble believing his results.

For folding, I keep my Q6400 at 3.2GHz with VCore at 1.38-1.4v. Temps in a warm room under full load are 48-50C which is acceptable to me.

I'm sure watercooling would help a little. I believe eva2000 is using watercooling with his quad core. Maybe he could chime in at some point.

Ok, the longest Ive run Orthos so far is 5-6 hours before trying other combinations.
Its possible that I would heat up more after 18 hours and not be stable though.
This chip is very interesting, I do think with the best air cooling I may be able to get orthos @ 3.6ghz but that may be stretching.
If you think watercooling will only help a little I may just wait until I can put together a phase cooling system.

edit: I dont use Speed Fan anymore either.
Core Temp and PC Probe report with 2c most of the time so I usually stick with PC Probe.
Although sometimes Core Temp seems to report me off by alot and then shut down, but if Orthos was off in those cases I doubt I would not get Orthos error at over 100c and PC Probe only show 50-70.

my E6600 at 3.6 ghz is at 82 degrees , i dont know what to do, the core temo says 85 degrees is the maximum, at 3ghz it was at 59 C, the voltage at 3.6 is 1.58v. I cant affort a water system, do you think the cpu is going to die for 24/7?

Jinu117 is trying to see the best way to tune a single stage to best handle quad core loads. It seems a standard vapo or basic custom ss cant hold low temps under load. I'd like to go quad core also but it would be pointless for me if i couldnt keep temps low enough to go 4ghz or higher.

I am in the same position as you with my QX6700,it runs pretty hot when i have it clocked at 3Ghz,and i wasn't sure if water cooling would be enough to get it down to desents temps,so i have been looking at an alternative to water,its called Thermoelectric which is supposed to get the cpu down to 0 degrees at idle and 0.5 at full load from the reviews i have read,this was the one i am looking at

Thanks eva but how many degrees do you think that would lower my temps,because i read a review on overclockers.au for a $500 water cooling kit http://www.overclockers.com.au/artic...?id=516509&P=5 and all it did was lower the temps by 10 degrees,and for me 10 degrees wouldn't be anywhere near enough considering my qx6700 temps go as high as 80 degrees when i overclock at 3Ghz.

Thats why i was thinking that i really need something like this Thermoelectric system,is the triple fan radiator system much better than the normal water cooling kit do you think.

I didn't want to go near the vaporchill gear but i thought this Thermoelectric stuff might be the next best thing and its a few hundred dollars cheaper than vapor to.

water will drop core2 temps down by around 8-18C from high end air cooling.. high end air would drop core2 load temps by 5-20C from stock intel hsf...

QX6700 on water probably between 60-75C load temps.... at above 1.45-1.5v vcore

Yeah no i am not really interested in running prime95 all day heh,but when i am doing normal stuff like encoding with dvd shrink or main concept the temps are around anything from 65 to 75 with the big typoon depending on how hot the day is,thats overclocked at 3Ghz to,when i run prime95 it goes straight up to 80 to 83 degress,so if i did go normal water is there any water kit you would recommend,i was looking at this one if i went normal water http://www.pccasegear.com/prod3044.htm
What water cooler are you using by the way,maybe i should just get the same system as your using.

I just notest that the water kit in that link has only a twin fan radiator,which kit would have the tripple fan radiator do you think.

QX6700 + anymobo = HOT!

High temps here as well with Bad Axe 2 + QX6700 (step 4)

At 330x10 24/7 here, 1.475 bios (1.412 orthos load) : 74° with Alphacool NexXxos XP + double radiator. Need to install my triple but time is the problem ;)

Great coverage on the RD600 by the way, EVA2000 ! Did you test your quad on that one yet ?

Thanks... haven't tested Q6600 on it yet.. thoroughly testing memory and settings with E6600s first for both Asus 680i Striker and DFI ICFX3200 RD600 - always best to get memory related settings figured out and out of the way.. makes oc'ing the rest alot easier in the long run :D

As to parts..

Thermochill 120.3HE or 120.3PA only available overseas AFAIK, i got mine from dangerden.com in USA... but you could try locally sourced triple fan rads still better than local dual fan rads :)

You can get T lines and rads and pumps from http://www.radiical.com.au/ as well when they reopen from holiday break.

MCP650/655 can run from psu power, but i choose to use external psu with a relay switch > http://www.fileshosts.com/watercooling/custompsu/html/
