P5B-D/E6300 no boot at default settings

Hi

* Motherboard: P5B Deluxe Wifi
* Processor: E6300
* Bios Revision: 0614
* Memory: Ocz Platinum Xtc PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-5-4-15
* Cooling: TT Big Typhoon /w Arctic Silver 5
* Power Supply : OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W PSU
* Configured Voltages: vCore = 1.47x, vdimm = 2.30 vFSB = 1.45, vNB = 1.65
* Configured FSB: 500 FSB
* Configured Ratio: 1:1 Cpu/Ram Dual channel
* Configured Memory Timings: 5 - 5 - 5 - 15

I configured my motherboard's cpu/ram and every other setting in bios by the book following most of intel guides here on XS forum, i also set *safe* cpu and memory voltages and parameters.

I followed this guide bellow for testing methods;

cpu-z displayed everything ok.

I ran memtest86+ test 5 about 7 times, then full tests about 5 times successfully.

Then i ran SuperPi for both cores at 32M successfully.

Finally i ran Orthos SP2004 for about 4 hours, everything seemed fine, so i let it run 4-5 more hours then i went to check on it and found out that windows xp froze from a critical error i believe.

From there on windows would not reboot, i get no post. I had to perform CPR wich consists of switching the power supply on/off to attempt to boot the system and reset bios to default settings, which i did, and even now at default the system won't boot or post.

I also removed the battery and cleared the CMOS like outlined in the motherboard's manual and that didn't help.

Actually i went through the same scenario the first time i recieved my conroe setup. Everything was running fine and i was using Orthos for about 3 hrs, but the next day when i woke up the computer turn off. no matter what i do, the motherboard will not post. After many attempts on clearing CMOS and turn on/off PSU, finally i decided to RMA the motherboard. After then, everything runs smoothly.

i don't understand the title of default settings and you are showing 500 FSB with "x" amount of voltage settings...which is it?..overclocking and it does not post or at default settings it does not post?

i would say the OCZ memory is your root cause....i've seen people have post problems with OCZ memory...you should go corsair.

Like i said in my original post, i was overclocked at 500 FSB 1.47x V running orthos stable for 4 hours, then 4 - 5 hours later windows froze and the pc won't even post even after i set all parameters to default.

I had the exact same problem with my two conroe builds.

The first: It was due to the OCZ ram, I had to RMA and get a new one because it just randomly crashed the computer.

The 2nd: I had it running stock for about 1 day then ran orthos for about 20minutes then it turned off and the fans wouldnt even boot up! I then got fed up and just had mobo, heatsink and psu and tried to powerup still didn't work! So it was the mobo, cpu or psu. I doubt it was the cpu or mobo so i stuck the psu into another computer and it didn't work. So i rma the psu for a refund with newegg went out to frys and grabed a ultra v series 600w and the computer is running fine. I'll be upgrading to a Altec truepowerii 550w after i get my refund. So in short try what i did and i think your psu is doa.

The fans are booting up for me.
I really have no idea what's the cause or solution. Could you point me to a hardware guide so that i can test the components ? Otherwise i will just have to get it tested by a pc tech.

Ok guys i found out what was causing no boot.

I knew it was a hardware issue, but since im a hardware novice i tought might as well make sure it wasn't a memory issue... and guess what, the problem was indeed a bad memory module after all!! :confused:

The memory modules are rated up to 2.2v under OCZ warranty. My bios has only options for 2.25v and 2.3 +. I testes 2.25 and 2.3, but im quite sure i didn't fry the memory on those settings, im positive it's bad memory.

What id like to know is, does vdroop affect memory voltage ?

Can stress testing such as orthos sp2004 blend cpu/ram test cause memory to stop working or fry, or is it just a case of bad memory module ?

I think it is your psu. By the way the memory should be running at 2.1v. Try jumpstarting your psu or try your psu in another computer.

Is your computer booting up to bios now or not? As I said take out everything and leave just the psu, mobo, chip pluged in. See if it will boot up and give you a loud annoying beep. If it does then it is your ram but if it dosn't even boot up it is your psu, mobo or cpu. Then take your psu and try to jumpstart it and try it in another computer. If it dosn't work then it is your psu.... Just keep doing this untill you find the bad part.

It sounds more like a DOA psu from what I can tell.

I got it isolated to 1 faulty memory module. Everything runs fine now.
