Trying to get a set of Mac Pro heat sinks

I am looking for the best cooling solution for a dual socket 771 setup that is also relatively quite. I recently put together a dual Woodcrest system and I am trying to find a good cooling solution for it. Currently I have the passive 2U retail heat sinks installed and I have a pair of these. The problem with the Dynatrons is that they sound like jets taking off. Since this is going to be sitting under someone’s desk they can’t be used.

I know that the new Mac Pros have some good heat sinks and would like to use them if I can find them. Anybody know where I can get them?

Anybody have any other suggestions on a good heat sink that can fit in a ATX case.

Whats wrong with the passive retail ones?

& why can you just repace the fans on the dynatrons?

Sheesh, 50dB on each HSF....that's insane for sure....

Yeah, change the fans to some Evercool Alus (best 60mm) with some silicone pads.

Or get two of these passive 2U sinks....fine for Woodcrests. (or the 1U active/passive they offer.....any from there)

If you really want the Mac Pro heatsinks, I would think Ebay would be your best and probably only choice. I'd go with vapor's idea first.

The Dynatrons use 40mm fans so I would have to use another 40mm fan with them.

I already have the Intel heat sinks since they came with the CPUs. The problem, I thought, was that they were designed for a 2U system that has tons of air flowing over them. This system will be in this case which is not a 2U case and does not have the fans that would usually push a lot of air over the heatsinks.

I am just going to attach two 60m hans to the @U retial heatsinks then stress test it and see if they kep it cool enough.

The only Dynatron LGA771 sinks made have 60mm fans. The way they're made though does limit you to keeping with 60-or-smaller, which is a bummer, and really limits you....the Evercool Alus have as much CFM as your fans at around half-speed, but are much quieter (those fans you have are BEASTS).

The Intel HSFs should be fine as well....not gonna keep great temps, but they'll keep it stable at stock speeds. Adding a fan, like you're doing, should definitely allow them to stay cool enough. The 1U sinks need the extra airflow, the 2U should be plenty for Woodcrests (heck, Apple uses a low-cfm windtunnel with their RAM + two sinks, which aren't much more efficient, tbh) Since the V1x00 is an inverted case, and depending on the mobo you have, you can actually put a single, quiet 120/140mm fan spanning the two passive sinks, and brace it on the bottom of the motherboard compartment (if you want to).

What is a program that will let me load every core in XP pro. I have tried using SP2004 Orthos Edition but no matter how many windows of it I have running it only loads two cores.

I have the system setup and want to stress test it with the 2U heatsinks and fans for a few hours before I place it in the case.

Mac Pro heatsinks are not likely to start showing up on eBay for a long time. The only reasonable way to get them now would be by special ordering them from an Apple dealer as replacements parts. One could also try talking to these guys: http://www.allmac.com/

Man those are some pricey heat sinks.

I just used some pull ties to attach 80mm fans to each of the 2U heat sinks and under load the CPUs don't go past 55C. That works for me so I put the system together and called it a day.
