FSBwall with DS3 (I searched I swear!)

Hello,

I was hoping to make my first post a nice success post but I'm a bit disappointed with my setup, here's why...

I'm running a 6300 with a GA-965p-DS3 and patriot 667 2x1g ram . I bought that ram because of the good reviews I've seen on (random) review sites, and due to some claims on newegg. Chip is watercooled, rest is all air.

I've tried F1,F3,f4, atleast 1 beta F5, F5, and F6 now...

2 ds3 boards, 2 sets of (the same) ram, a regular PCI video card, all devices unplugged and disabled (except ide or sata ports), running a 6x instead of 7x, 60mm fan on the nb w/ a 120mm intake fan (seemed to help more than the 60mm fan). I haven't really messed with memory timings, though I did try 1 time to loosed then to 5-5-5-16.

No amount of voltage changes seem to help. While I haven't tried every viable combo, I've tried working my way up on each one (mch to +2, dimm +2, cpu @1.36v pcie +1)

What I don't get is the board literally gives up the overclock above 380. Upto 380 I can go fine with no voltage changes or anything. If I goto 381,385,390,400,410,425,435 nothing happens, board disables the fsb overclock and goes back to normal.

The only thing I kind of question is my PSU, it's only a 430w, but with only 1 sata hd connected, and a PCI ATI radeon 7000, I can't be over doing. Hell my bro ran this with an 805 at 3.5ghz with 3hd's,1dvd, an ati x800pro pci-e and a thermal take bigwater SE watercooler (which I inherited).

Am I SOL? Is it my chip? Is there something I'm just missing? It's been a good few years since I've overclocked, back when we still had to deal with jumpers, and a Celeron 300a w/Alpha HSF was a kick ass OC'er.

On the plus side, I still hit 2.66 but I was hoping for 3, I'm only disappointed because it's not acting like anyone elses setups that I can find.

Does your mobo have North bridge voltage control? If so try uping that.

yep. No luck. went up .1 and .2 volts

Let's just say DS3 is a piece of :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:.

For some that it....

I have heard that sometimes you need to go back, set teh fsb to factory speed and save settings. On the next reboot go straight to the speed you want to try. I guess the sudden change makes the chipset change strap, where gradually going up it is still running the default memory strap. Its worth a try anyhow.

also what are you running the ram divider on?

and boot up at defaults.. set the ram divider to 2.00
go straight to 400mhz fSB
set vdimm to +4
pci-e freq to 100mhz (if you havent done this yet im gunna scream)
set pci-e voltage to plus 1
set fsb and (g)mch voltage to auto
set vcore to 1.40 (this is more than enough voltage all im trying to do is make sure you have enough voltage)
leave the SPD timings on auto for now
once you do that reboot.


and what patriot ram do you have ? if its junk ram then...


and look at it this way... you had multiple mobo's and multiple cpu's so what is the one thing you havent changed ?
RAM ? and i dont mean 2 sets of the same ram. i mean different brands.
PSU ? 480 what ? 480 Sparkle ? 480 Antec ?
what are the amps on your 12v 3.3v and 5v rails ?
have you used a multimeter to check for droop on your PSU ?

there is no way in hell that 2 mobo's are doing the same thing. there is something your doing that is causing it or something about the other hardware your using.

DS3 is a ok board .. i hope the new bios fix ocing though

My thoughts exactly.

I don't have access to a second cpu, atleast one that will handle high FSB's.
PSU is an Antec True power 2.0 430w (click for specs), I havent' attacked it with a multimeter yet.

The Ram is the exact same as before (I had to rma it due to a slight mishap), it's been known by a few review sites (click for 1 review)to easily hit 450fsb's, and I've seen personal reviews of 500..
I tried some other ram I had laying around (random 512mb pqi) and it was complete crap, couldn't do 330. Now that I think about it, I didn't test to see if it acted the same way this ram did.

I'll try out the settings you recommend and report back.

Ok. Lestat, I tried your suggestions, and they didn't work.

I tried exactly as you said and it failed.

I noticed at +4 the DDR18 in "pc health status" said "fail", when I put it back to +3 it said "ok."

I also tried "load optimize defaults" let the system boot, then shut down the system. And then try your settings. Then did the same while trying to adjust the mch and fsb (+1 on fsb, and +1,+2 on mch). no luck.

I then repeated the above, but disabled and unplugged everything I could (usb devices, no cd/dvds) and only ran 1 seagate sata hd, the only thing was I didn't swap my video card back to the PCI radeon 7000. My normal one is an X800 pro PCI-e. I'll try once more with the pci card, unless anyone comes up with other suggestions.

I tried to adjust anything to do with overclocking all at once, as well as what I Normally do which is to boot up and set the voltages, then shut down and start it back up before proceeding to change any actual speed settings.

I'll try to have my brother put my ram in his pentium 805 system and see if he can get more out of it than I can. But that could still leave the variable of PSU (he's got a rather nice thermaltake 4rail 700+ watter), chip, and motherboard.

Could this be a power issue? Is a 2 rail 430w psu really not upto the task? Or could I just not have a cpu that gets the job done?

have you tried the F6b beta BIOS for the DS3?
that one allowed me to boot at 500fsb with an E6700 on a 7 multi.
using other BIOS's i would hit a wall at around 375

when overclocking at 1:1... if your am isn't up to the task, then that will be your limit.

have you verified that the ram itself can go above 380?

Pyro: I've tried the non beta f6 release but it caused really odd power on issue's. Got a link to f6b?

Kunaak: I'm hoping to get the oportunity to throw my ram in another system and try it, otherwise, I can't single it out to make sure it's not holding me back.

you can single out your ram by using higher memory ratios

i will say this the DS# is VERY VERY PSU sensative.
i have seen it reject some decent psu's too. and the Antec 2.0 which is absolutely nothing special is one of them...

if you have the chance,, snag one of the OCZ PowerStream PSU's from the For Sale section here. you will NEVER regret it. they are awesome psu's.

im not saying thats gunna fix anything and Kunnak said what i was gunna say and didnt

it dont matter what brand or make of ram it is if it isnt up to the overclock then your s.o.l. you need better ram.

I didn't know about the PSU's. I'll have to see how my funds are in a few days...
In the mean time I'll try my bro's thermaltake.

I threw my ram in my brothers abit aw8-d w/pentium 805, and ran it @ 1:1 at 410fsb (had his processor upto 4.1, he's very :woot: ey right now).

I also tried going to F6b, my system won't boot now. time to find a damn floppy drive.

OT: why in gods name are we still dealing with floppies for drivers or bios updates? Seriously? Why not support pulling bios files off of thumb drives or cd's? or even hd's?

Just use the @Bios program found on the Gigabyte CD that came with your motherboard, it runs in windows and works great!!!!

That only works if windows would boot ;) Normally I do.

I just messed with the ram ratio and had it run at 915 (366 fsb, 2.5 ram multipler) with +3 dimm. I could only get it to boot at 6x cpu multiplier though, going upto 7 and it would reset.

For now I'm going to assume it's just my PSU, unless anyone comes up with another suggestion or I find something. Hopefully I can pick up the OCZ in a few days.

F6 sucked for me..
F3 is the best one for me so far..
Right now orthos and everything else stable I can throw @ it 462 1:1 3234
The only voltages ive changed is cpu to 1.36 and all else is on stock changed all those options to disable, turbo on ram option and turbo on video bandwith option ..

try f3 and dont go all out on the volts, my board hates any voltages being raised..

Took me a while to figure all this out, but thats what it is..

I've been tempted to try F3, I'll have to try it tonight. Thanks for the suggestion.

Edit/Update: Was the Processor. Swapped out for an E6400 and had no problems doing 455.
