STAINLESS STEEL suction line brazing Guide.

Okay... I am sick of these people getting hostile over brazing this, getting parts, etc. Maybe written guides is not enough... :mad:
Few things.
Good luck looking for stainless steel line with good pressure rating, etc in small qty. I only see 100ft or 500ft rolls. In fact even most builders in US didn't know 100ft qty can be obtained until late last year.
For those of you who were able to obtain it... here is the guide.
#1) Clean the copper throughly!
#2) Stainless steel must be tight fit with copper. You are asking for trouble otherwise. Those whose braze falls off... is because not enough heat is conducted to stainless steel. Only tight fit will let you braze this.
#3) Don't ever put flame on stainless steel. You will make it weaker prone to breaking as well as possibly melting through.
#4) Flux only where it is necessary on stainless steel part. For copper, do what you like. I do few inches up to ease cleaning up after I am done brazing.
#5) Clean off flux throughly. Lot of stainless steel will corrode with it or have chemical reaction and could make it brittle.

Can you tell us the type of flux and rods used?

I think he used 40% silver rods

45% braze and white flux rated for 1200f or something like that... me thinks :P

Also nice to know that I have 2 of those sucker's inc from you all brazed up with chilly1 evap's.:D Hope to get them in soonish so I can put my 2 SS's together in the mean time useing your guide on load tester. Hit up Haborfreight for some much needed tools and router speed control. To bad Harborfeight website list's it for 13 bucks buy not the home store i got at sigh 25 bucks oh well. :mad:

Ohe well... here is what you are getting either way. I forgot to mention but the 9ft tag is where cap tubing is 9ft... you can use that as reference length.

Of course for production... :) I just whipped things out and didn't want to spend my time setting up purging for this... it was sent to someone as practice and example for look at... (hope he doesn't use it since it isn't purged)

nice, i think the reason ppl are complaining, is because on the stickies, lots of the pics turned into redexes.. not sure if the brazing one was fixed as i havent looked in a while though.

Jin nice guide. In fact all the ones you have been making are helpful. here's a tip on the proper way to adjust a o2/acet torch for brazing.

your torch should be adjusted for a "quit" flame with a inner blue tip just starting to "feather" sounds like you can reduce your regulators a little.you have to much what is called "blow" turn pressures down to torch quitens down and the inner blue flame tips start to feather. This will be a slightly cooler flame,work the torch more,say 270 degrees around, and keep touching the rod to the oppisite side as the heat. when its hot enougth, the rod will melt and flow around towards the heat. Remember the filler (rod) flows towards the heat ,that why you apply it to the oppsite side you are heating.

forgot to mention by using a cooler flame set right th o2 is mostly ued up in the combustion process of making heat and you can use the torch flame to sheild the joint on the outside the same way you use nitrogen on the inside. after some practice you n make a perfect joint with littlle to no sooting or scale to clean.

Ehehe... Walt you are absolutely correct but I rather get my brazing done quick and over with :) Just like me using soldering iron. I like things bit warmer and quicker and out of job :) (I use the perfect flame for the cap tubing at the end at least... it heats up too fast otherwise)

Jinu - could you take a picture of the braided mesh before its put around the stainless steel flex line? ;)

Better yet - could you take a picture of the mesh, copper, and stainless steel flex line laying seperate together. :eek:
