DS3 even odder memory problem

Yesterday when I got in the mail my Corsair memory to replace the Gskill, I inserted a single 1 gig stick in the last red slot, and everything finally worked. Installed Windows, updated to SP2, updated bios from F1 to F3.

So finally I figure it's time to put the second corsair stick in for dual channel. I put it in the 2nd slot, the first red one.

Upon booting the restart forever symptom happens. I remove that stick I just put in and it starts up normal again. I think maybe it's DOA.

So as a test I remove the stick that works from the last slot and I put in the bad stick there to test if it was the stick and not just dual channel messing it up.

Upon booting it does the endless restart again. Now I figure it must be the stick. So I remove it and put the good one back in to that 4th slot which it had worked in before.

But now, the good ram didn't work anymore, just endless reboot. I removed the battery for a while. I reseated it many times in that slot, etc, just wouldn't want to work. even though it did in the past Then I think, maybe the bad ram effected that slot in some way. So I move the good ram form that slot to the third, yellow, slot that hadn't been touched yet, except for the Gskill days ago.

Upon booting it finally worked.

So why did this happen like that, why would the system no work anymore with the good in that slot anymore until I moved it to another. What should I do to test more without worrying about nothing working again, like if the 2nd stick is not DOA but another odd DS3 issue.

This is the memory, which is 1.9volts isntead of the problem ram that are usually 2.1 or higher:

Hmm, I acted more careful. I set the memory to 533mhz, then shut down and move the stick I knew was good to the first slot, amazing I can get to it with the Ninja and Fan over it.

It started up fine from there. So I add that second stick that gave me trouble into the 3rd, yellow, slot for dual channel. This time it started up fine.

Also, each time I did anything on the mobo I turned the PSU off and pulled the cable from the back like normal, but this time I always hit the power button to discharge, or whatever, the motherboard to make sure it had no power. I don't know if that made a difference.

So I then restarted it a couple times until the memory was back to 800mhz and now all is fine.

Now it's time to learn to overclock, cpu temp right now on the e6400 is idling around 25-27c, no bad with the cpu fan only at 585rpm for the moment.

did you raise the voltages in the bios ? if you didnt...:slapass:

Am I suppose to? I'm sort of a noob and I figure it's at the right voltage,, havn't overlocked yet or anything, only needs 1.9 so it's not like I needed to bump it up to get ram to work that need 2.1volts and so on. I also don't think I recall seeing an exact voltage on the ram, maybe an option like vdimm over voltage option. I'll check now what it's at.

well,, things being as goofy as they may be in the pc world. one should always try things from all angles.

if you havent touched the voltages its only 1.8 not 1.9.

change the voltages to +2 and see what she does. if it still wont boot change it to +3

what does the sticker on the ram say ? even if it says 1.9v it may not work that way in this board. or other boards for that matter.
the ram is DDR800 you may or may not need more volts but that little voice in my head is saying raide the vdimm to +3.
its not going to hurt anything that ram will handle it jsut fine.
set it for +3 if it runs ok then change it to +2 see what it does.
but be aware if you overclock leave it at +3.

Thing is, in my 2nd post in this thread I said that it's now running fine in dual channel at 800mhz with the two sticks of Corsair, so I'm typing this on that PC right now.

I haven't changed anything on the Dimm Over Volt option, so it's set to normal. I assume this means it's still running at 1.8v? And if I set it to .1v then it would be at 1.9, and that it wouldn't hurt to set it to .2v for 2.0 volt?

no that ram is fine with 2.0 or 2.1 or 2.2v

sorry i didnt notice it was running, my bad. :\

so glad to hear its running.
